I saw the Steve Morse band open for the Dixie Dregs last Wednesday in Ventura. This is a great way to see Steve Morse, starting with a trio then adding the keys, violin, and change drummers for the dregs. This was the 18th time I have seen SM, I have been a fan for 20 + years.
They played all the regular stuff, and there cool covers of "Shapes of things" and "Cashmere", Steve and Dave Larue did some very cool acoustic classical stuff, and loads of the rock/country/fusion, that only SM can write.
I spoke to Rod Morganstein, and Dave Larue before the show at sound check. Rod was not feeling very well but it did not show in his playing. Steve was playing as good as always.
Also, last night I saw Joe Bonamassa. This was the second time I have seen him, I saw him open for Peter Frampton about a year ago. This guy is totally the real deal, absolutely the best Rock/Blues/progressive players I have ever seen. Please see him if you get the chance, He is a very well rounded player. Joe and Steve do the pinky volume control very well, I have been working on this for many years and was impressed with there mastery of this technique. They can do very fast lines but you hear no pick attack.
Lots of great music happening right now. I am totally into the new Pat Metheny, been through it about 7 times now. I cant wait for the new 2 disk Scott Henderson Live, and the new Steve Vai.
It’s a great time for great music, Take care you all……

I enjoyed the Joe Bonamassa show too -- he's got a great stage personality and his music is very good.
I agree there's lots of great music happening now. I saw Galactic last week and I love their "new" sound. They've made some recent changes to the band and now they're ALL instrumental with emphasis on B3 organ, drums and sax. They still got a guitar & bass player, but the B3 & sax stole the show. It was refreshing and adventurous -- a non-stop dance party !
Mofro is another jam band putting out some great original music. I saw them this weekend and enjoyed their show a lot too.
It's cool to see people of all ages getting out and enjoying some truly great music together !
This is a link for the Wanee Music Festival, happening in Florida in April. The line-up is overwhelming
We heard Joe play in Rochester last night and I agree with the other posters that he is a great player . The band was late getting to the venue as they had vehicle breakdown problems and Joe seemd a little cranky during the soundcheck, but all that changed once the music started. The band was a power trio and were very loud for not a very large room ( Milestones.....where Robben plays when in upstate NY ).I'm not a gearhead like my son but Joe had 2 Budda cabs, each with 4X12 speakers, and each with a Marshall head on it. He placed a folding plexiglass screen right in front of these, I'm not sure why. These are 3 young guys and there is a lot of jumping around and gyrations, but the music and playing is undeniably good. A long version of Jeff Beck and Rod Stewart's 'Blues Deluxe" was just awesome. The encore was a smoking version of Blind Faith's " Had to Cry Today" played much faster and heavier than on Joe's cd. Joe has done a lot of playing and recording in tha Ithaca area right near me, and Utica is his hometown so it was a very enthusiastic crowd.
In his bio Joe lists Robben as a major influence on his playing and as one of his alltime favorite players. One can see some simliarities.....he isn't quite to the substance over flash mode that Robben so brilliantly captures, but the guy definitely has chops to die for. It was nice to hear Joe again after quite a few years and we really enjoyed his show .
I might also mention that Joe's guitar tech worked from a rack with 13 different guitars on it, of which Joe used 5 different ones. 2 different strats, a gold Les Paul, a Chandler for the slide songs, and a cool looking guitar that my son said was Italian made.

My guess about the folding Plexiglass is stage volume and pyscho-acoustics. If you are playing loud on a big stage, the direct sound in your ear can be too loud and affect the way that your hands work the strings, also rip your ears off. A lot of guys will turn their amps around, (open back cabs), or put something in front so they can have their volume up but not have the direct sound in their ear. My experience is that the high end transients mess me up. i hate standing directly in front of my amp. For me the best sound is always about 10-15 ft to the side of the rig. then I can dig in and play the way i want. Anyway, just a guess...

fingerlakes, reading your post brings me back to the Joe B. show I saw several months ago in Boston. The trio not only blew the doors off the place, but I could swear the walls had gaping holes in 'em too... :-)
I remember that "cool looking, Italian made" guitar too. Very nice!
And, Eric Czar, the bass guitarist, is one bad-ass (looking and playing) dude.
Joe's "Blues Deluxe" and "New Day Yesterday: Live" cds are in my car's (my main listening space) permanent rotation... _________________ Soul on Eleven

Unfortunately, the Joe Bonamassa trio of 4 years have disbanded, and it appears that Joe will have a new line-up sometime in '06. Although the drummer was kickin', the bassist, Eric Czar, is one to keep an eye out for. I can't imagine Joe finding guys that complimented him as well as these guys, but we'll see...
Also, just wondering if anyone either has, or knows someone who has Joe Bonamassa's cd/dvd combo of So, It's Like That. It was a limited edition set that is no longer available. I've found a few used sets on amazon and ebay, but the asking price is outrageous. I'd just like to borrow the dvd. Thanks... _________________ Soul on Eleven
