I don't think I saw it mentioned anywhere on this thread...but my favorite cd with Robben Ford on it has got to be Minor Elegance. It was recorded in the early 90's by Joe DiOrio. It includes Joe DiOrio, Robben Ford, Peter Erskine and Gary Willis. All the tunes are instrumentals, mostly jazz, recorded "live-in-the-studio". Ford and DiOrio share the solos evenly. The tunes range from funk to bepop to slow melodic things. If it was vinal i'd have worn completely through it. Its very difficult to find....but worth the effort...
Great thread, was wondering if anyone ever put together a complete discography.Seems this is a good start.
One i haven't seen mentioned yet is a cd 'Say What Now?' by Blaze. They are a group led by drummer Brannen Temple. Most often described as Jazz/Hip Hop.Brannen did a stint with Robben a year or two ago. He's on 4 tracks including 'Nardis' and a Prince song 'Do You Lie?'

Also to add to the list;
West of Somewhere - John Kaizan Neptune 3 tracks
Do You Wonder- Shawn Phillips 2 tracks
Woman - Burt Bacharach and the Houston Symphony

Wow, Irgendeiner really has a serious list together. I'm not sure about listing "aranger" for Pat's Bremenale album. All the guitar playing there is by John Wedemeyer (a monster in his own right).
The cuts where Robben trades fours with Garth Webber on Man on a Mission are worth the price of admission although Garth's playing throughout is the best I've heard of him on disk. IMHO both John and Garth are way under-represented in recorded form. And like Robben, you really have to see them live. Maybe if more people appreciated Robben, there would be more room under that umbrella for some other folks to get recognized.
For the fusionheads, Robben's playing on Hilary's Soaring is reminiscent of the first Yellowjackets, even the tone is similar.
Robben plays less on Minor Elegance than Diorio but when he comes in, it's like a horn player, these soaring melodic lines that make Joe seem clinical by comparison.
Robben's solo on Work Song on Pat's Butterfield tribute is simply amazing. In a couple of choruses he puts blues and bop together in a way that should be mandatory listening for players in any genre. And he does it all within the confines of the Bloomfield minor blues scale. Incredible! _________________ There are no such things as wrong notes, there's only the look on your face.

I agree, not real musical but good stuff to study. A buddy transcribed Blues for All Space Cadets and it turned out to be totally mathematical. Kind of like that half diminished lick Robben ripped through at the last clinic. Sometimes a "device" (as he calls them) gets you from here to there.[/quote] _________________ There are no such things as wrong notes, there's only the look on your face.

Don't hear too much about his work with the LA Express. To me this is some of his best work, because he had to pour a lot of heart into a limited amount of solo space across a wide variety of tunes. Tom Cat is my favorite, but the second one he did (without Tom Scott) is also good. Outstanding rhythm work, too.

That CD is like the middle setting of a Telecaster: you mix a trebly pickup with a bassy one and it sounds sweet.
The CD is like mixing hot and boring which makes it sweet.
The contrasts really emphasise how good Robben's solo's are.

P.S. However, I've noticed that boring people like boring musicians which leaves a space for everyone.

We shouldn't forget the bonus track on the Charles Ford CD re-release. Live fusion jamming at it's best. I've heard that Pat has hours and hours of tapes from these days in Palo Alto. Folks that have heard them say that you can hear Robben putting together his style, and you can still pick out various influences. Maybe someday Pat and Robben will get together cull though this stuff and put out something cool. Put Schitzophonic under the table where it belongs. _________________ There are no such things as wrong notes, there's only the look on your face.

Aeolian - too true. This is a great intro CD into where RF was headed early on. Pretty amazing for such a young guy if you think about it. I wore out my LP years ago and just recently picked up the CD with the extra cuts. I use Gibson Creek Shuffle as an intro instrumental from time to time, too. Fun song to play.
