Those were great photo's. I saw Eric Johnson in New Orleans a year or so back and the boy is "Diseased with Tone" as Dave would say....... |

Cannonball Shuffle in A
Politician in C
and maybe one more??
Robben's sig chain...
LP-->Zen Drive-->Boss Delay Pedal --> two new reissue twin reverbs.
EJ's chain..
Fiesta Red Early 60's Strat-->real Fuzzface--> new reissue twin reverb.
Let me just say that the first thing I did when I got home was call Alfonso who makes the Zen Drive and ordered one. It's that good!
Robben's tone clean and through the Zen was very close (say 95 to 98%) of his normal tone with the full Dumble Rig with the TC2290. It was that good! Chalk one up for the tone is in the hands guys!
Now I am sure it felt a lot different than the Dumble rig does to Robben on stage. But as someone standing in the audience, hearing the amps mostly through the PA it sounded very very close to the normal Robben tone. Maybe, a little less delay than the normal Robben tone - which I liked!
EJ's tone was no where near his tone the following day through his normal rig. As we all know, EJ spends a lot of effort fine tuning his setup. This was not his setup! It sounded like a Fuzzface through a new Twin - you know that midrangey, buzzy, fuzzfacey, tone.
I got a chance to debrief with Daved after the show. He mentioned that EJ and his tech were pretty blown away by the zen drive.
Me too... the tone and Robben's playing.
Everybody was great at the show, but no guitarist phrases like Robben Ford! He has the gift! Like Michael Brecker has the gift, like Miles Davis had the gift, like Scott Henderson has the gift.... It's intellectually interesting and at the same time so freakin musical...
Totally freaks me out every time I hear it!!! _________________ www.hendersounds.com

Thanks Dave for the great pictures. That had to be amazing to see both Robben and EJ together.
I totally agree that Robben's phrasing is what is so unique. While his tone and touch are fantastic, its his phrasing that really does it for me.
Now where's Alfonso's phone number.... |

Thanks again for the pics Captain. Got a Zendrive myself sometime ago, and that definitely is a great pedal. The AC Booster is gathering dust now... |

Hi Kirk,
many thanks for the superb photo's. You are one lucky guy; RF & EJ on stage together in what looks like a fantastic setting!
Now to the Zen pedal. This may be the affordable holy grail for me. How do I get one? Is it the Zen Drive, or Zen Drive 2? Are they REALLY as good as you say, I mean this pedal and my little Mesa amp, and hey presto, one Dumble??
Please let me know the full details.
Many thanks again, and keep up the great work.
Cheer's,

I can only imagine EJ's set up. I would assume hes better off in indoor venues where the tonal quality is more controlled rather having to come out on stage with Robben with no sound check (i assume)...I bet it was a great show and I wish I could have been there. Dave you were in for a treat for sure ! |

An interview with Eric Johnson is the featured cover story in the September issue of Guitar Player magazine. It's a wonderful interview -- he talks about his new album, "Bloom," and he admits to "loosening up bit" on his obsession with tone. Lots of beautiful photos accompany the article. I took a quick listen to Bloom at the bookstore. I like the variety of music included on the disc. I'm looking forward to listening to it a few more times today. _________________ Travelling by train of thought |

This past Saturday I was driving into Austin and listening to NPRs Weekend Edition and who should be a guest but EJ himself. They played several songs on the studio plus an interesting interview. Check out NPRs website - this is all supposed to be available, plus some video of the session. |
