Great to meet you in Seattle last night David. What a show(s) Stayed for the second as well. Appreciated your comments about Robbens gear and fun chatting about Segarini. Small world. The Tonkers do sound great. Forgot to ask and the others may be interested to know. How/ why did you determine that the Tonkers needed a smaller magnet? Doe sit change the tone and in what way?

Pleasure chatting with you too.

I will probably be seeing Bob next month when Allman Brothers Band plays in Toronto. He usually shows up when I come to town and give him a call. We most recently visited at the show Robben did in Toronto last year, but we keep in touch regularly by e-mail and phone.
He often sends me demos of new material and/or projects he's involved in.
Most currently that would be his band Cats And Dogs (available thru the Canadian Bullseye Records site) including former April Wine and Mashmakan and Segarini members.
I don't remember if I mentioned that Bullseye is planning on releasing a long overdue retrospective of his career (Family Tree, Roxy, Wackers, Dudes, Segarini, etc.) later this year.
In addition, there's a collaberative side project release available as The Anger Brothers with several other top Canadian artisits.
He's also been working on the much anticipated (by those of us who are into him, anyway Wink ) follow up to "Gotta Have Pop", entitled "Grand Pop". He's very excited about it.

As for the Tonkers, Robben likes the sound of Tonkers but, especially with his Dumble cabinet, they are just so loud that we are experimenting with Eminence to try to find a way of quieting them without losing anything in the tone and response.

I've got my Tonkers in a Bogner 2x12 shiva open back cabinet. This cabinet is mostly open (like a fender twin). I think it helps a little with the loundess.

There's this little knob, just to the left of the presence control... Wink

But seriously, while the Tonkers are just slightly more efficient than the average Celestion, I think it is their uncanny presence and dynamic response that makes them feel louder than they actually are in dB. The great thing is that this presence doesn't come with forward or shrill midrange, it just sounds more immediate. The transfer function, their response to input, is a bit part of how they complement a non-homogonizing amp like the Dumble. It lets someone who uses that responsiveness for musical purposes, like Robben, really have more range to work with. Typical methods to reduce efficiency, like reducing the flux density, or increasing the motor gap, would really adversely affect this responsiveness. It will be interesting to see what EMI can come up with.

In the venues I play in, I can't get that little knob next to the presence anywhere near where Robben puts his. Most times it's barely on and the amp is chokeing. I may end up pulling two output tubes to make it a 50 watter. It may lose some of that girth, but I've been losing some of that anyway, using a one Tonker cab for all but the most crowded rooms or outdoor gigs. Even in a big room, if it has an elevated stage that plays over the top of the dance floor, the 2-12 is just too loud.

What a pity, as it sounds so good when it can breathe.

BTW, at Yoshi's Robben's tone was thicker than I've heard in years. Still had that open top attack and was very responsive to his variations in technique. These things really complement his playing.

I noticed that Robben is using a Dr.Z Z-Best cab. Dr.Z stated that the one shipped to Robben has the standard config of Celestion Vintage 30 and a Celestion GH30.

Did Robben replace the Celestions for Tonker's in the Z-Best 2x12?

I don't know. I didn't know Robben even had one of these cabinets. I've never seen it, Robben has never mentioned it, and (unless he's hiding it at his house) it's not in with any of his stored gear.
When have you seen him using it?

Dr.Z has a picture of Robben playing though one of his cabs in some backline situation. For someone who makes decent gear, it's a kind of disapointingly shaddy implication of endorsement.

The only Z cabinet I am aware of Robben ever using, was about 3 years ago when we flew into a gig in the midwest somewhere (Wisconsin, maybe) and found that the speaker in Robben's Dumble O/D combo had a glitch in the surround that produced some distortion. A Z-cab was offered, along with a couple other brand cabs, to get us thru the one show. The Z-cab was not a sound Robben would normally use, but it sounded decent and was selected for use, so Robben, as a 'thank you', agreed to pose with it for the person who lent it to us, for their own memory, but "not for publicity or endorsement use".

I would hope not, but IF that photo is being used to 'endorse' the Z-cab, then Robben was obviously lied to again.

Daved, I just went to Dr. Z's website. Under the section on speaker cabs there is a picture of Robben with the cab in the background. The caption just says it is Robben playing through the speaker cab. That certainly would at least imply and endorsement to me. That's pretty shoddy.

Yes, as I remember it, TonemanDan did take the photo. Dan himself was a very pleasant and straight ahead kinda guy... very helpful and friendly, which is why Robben agreed to pose for the picture.
If I remember correctly, he is friends with Z and I'm sure that any use of that photo on Z's site was not his intention when the photo was actually taken.
