Yup, can't wait. I've got my 3rd row center balcony tickets a few weeks ago. Small theater- the best way to go!

Sounds like a great night a music! Of course it always is when Robben is playing!

I'm pretty sure, or at least I'm under the impression, that Robben is playing in the Bluesbreakers band. If I remember correctly, John Mayall's website clarifies this... _________________ Soul on Eleven |

Robben will be breaking blues as a member of Mayall's band, rather than performing in his own band.
That is the main reason I will not be out on that tour with Robben as Mayall's organization will have their own production arrangements and personnel.
BTW, I briefly spoke on the phone with Robben the other day, and I believe he plans on taking his full Dumble rig with him for those shows. _________________ B C-ing U!

They are advertising the Carmel show on the local radio station as "three great guitarists". Is John playing more guitar than harp these days? Haven't really kept up with him. If Robben is bringing out the A ticket rig, you would think he'd be expecting to play some. _________________ There are no such things as wrong notes, there's only the look on your face.

Ahhhhhhh, Aeolian, there's no truth in advertising
I think this is going to be a great tour for Blues fans. I've seen John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers every time they've come through Tampa in recent years. He always puts on a great show at Skipper's and the fans here love him. I am disappointed there are no dates in Florida, but I couldn't miss this tour! I'll be going to the "Show-Me" State, St. Louis, to see the Show ........ Surprisingly, I was able to buy a one-way airline ticket for about the same amount as I spend on gas each week. I think there are lots of great seats still available.
I've been reading about some of John Mayall's hand-crafted guitars and I hope someday he'll bring all of them on tour. There are pictures of his red Squire on the Stories cd cover and the 70th Birthday Concert cd cover. Mayall's Squires are cut down in size and decorated with paint, carvings and inlays. He also customizes the cases for these guitars, to make them easy to travel with. _________________ Travelling by train of thought |

Has anyone seen the Bluesbreaker's w/Robben show yet? I would love to hear a review or see the set list. Just picked up my tickets for the 11/13 Fairfax, VA. show. |

Okay, here's the deal...McFarlin Auditorium on the SMU Campus. This was one of a series of concerts ranging from ballet to opera to this!! Most of the season ticket holders didn't know who the heck Robben was, but many recognized John Mayhall's name. Robben almost never plays my little corner of the world, so I was thrilled when I accidentally found he was playing in Dallas--I had to really scramble to get tickets. I've been a fan for 25 plus years. There were probably 500 or less in attendance.
The show was opened by Leon Bibb, who did an acoustic set--sort of Keb Mo' / Taj Mahal style, but he's his own man, plays and sings great, crowd loved him, especially a Mance Lipscomb number. He (Bibb) knows how to work the crowd. He called Robben on for his last number--and Robben played for the song, like the perfect sideman and didn't overshadow Bibb.
Robben stayed as Bibb left, then called out the Blues Breakers to back him up. Sorry, but I don't know their names, but they were adequate for blues, except the guitar player was a fine blues player--Buddy Eddington from Texas. Robben was all class, and was playing some smoking guitar with Buddy giving him tasteful and toneful backup.
I, and probably 10 others, were Robben fans (and musicians) but no matter, he sold the crowd. Robben used a red Les Paul through a Fender amp. I was prepared to be slightly disappointed because he wasn't using his personal gear, but his tone was mighty fine. Though from my side of the stage, his amp wasn't projecting and didn't have the presence that Buddy's did. I believe Robben was enjoying himself, really getting into it, and playing some inspired outside lines. ONE BIG COMPLAINT--his set was WAY too short, probably 45 minutes.
Robben was given a standing O after his last number but did not do an encore. Yeah, I drove 200 miles to see Robben for 45 minutes, but it was worth it. ROBBEN if you read this stuff, come back to Texas because you have many fans here. This night you made some fans that before were not familiar with you.
So the answer to a previous question: Robben wasn't Mayall's guitar player--that would be Buddy Eddington, a great player, check him out.

Welcome, Gary, and thanks for the review. There are couple of us Texans here on the board (and yes, Freddie is the MAN). 100 miles from Dallas puts you where on the map? And maybe if more of us speak up Robben will spend more time down here! |

After years of playing there have been some major influences that affected my playing and made me more passionate about playing. They are: early on, Chuck Berry, Scotty Moore, James Burton, Hank Garland, Howard Roberts, early George Benson, Pat Martino, Robben Ford.
Okay, now the point is: Robben is in the same class as the aforementioned. His playing was a breath of fresh air when I first heard him 25+ years ago and if anything he has gotten better and more interesting. I'll quit boring you now, but let's get Robben down here more often. I know he's been at one of the two guitar shows (my bro had a booth for years), I don't understand why they don't book him, instead of some of the more expensive and lesser talents. Anyone?

I heard from a VERY good source that I missed the best part of the concert by leaving at the first of the BB's set. I'm still kicking my own butt (very hard to do) for not staying to watch Robben and The BB's smokin' guitarist Buddy Whittington set it on fire. Don't miss it! |

Gary:
Paris - you guys are almost in Oklahoma! I have a good friend down the road a piece in Deport. That was a long haul for you to the Mayall show.
Funny you shold mention Hank Garland. I was thinking just the other day I needed to get his stuff on CD - I still have Jazz Winds on LP and have not listened to it in ages. I was listening to a Lou Donaldson CD and he was doing a version of "Move" that got me to thinking about Garland's version. What a player. Jazz Winds from a New Direction is one of the greatest jazz guitar releases ever - for those of you not familiar with this one, check it out. |

Yeah, we're in Baja Oklahoma.
Deport is probably 25 to 30 miles from Paris, almost a suburb. A friend of mine works with me and commutes from there everyday. We know 98% or more of the population in Deport.
Tell it like it is!! "Jazz Winds in a New Directions" blew my mind. EVERY player needs to own it . Hank's playing influenced George Benson, Pat Martino and many others. His "All the Things You Are" is killer. I got the LP when it first came out and I bought the CD a couple of years ago. Love it!! His accident was a tragedy... |
