Great post Daved
The Perry Como story had me thinking back when my mother used to play "Catch a falling star" at full volume on a Sunday morning . I too will now never look at that artist in the same light (Images of yourself, your cd player, glass of wine, sitting comfortably in a large arm chair listening to Perry C )
There's good advice within your post! I tell guitarists who are just starting out to always play something they love every time they pick up the guitar, (usually its something they reguarly listen to) but always learn something new each time. But more important, I tell them its best to listen to all types of music, artists they would never normally entertain the thought of listenening to them. I think this way they become more of a rounded player, and learn to enjoy music more generally. They could certainly take a leaf out of your book!
Currently listenning to Larry Carlton "Last Nite", John Mayer "Room full of squares", Herbie Hanncock "Headhunters" and Lyle Mays "Lyle Mays". Oh, and my daily fix of RF . Now where's that glass of red................
Cheer's,
DD
P.S I am always looking for something new to listen to. Can anyone reccomend anything stellar?!!!! _________________ Music is the universal language; speak it with emotion, listen with a passion. |

You forgot to mention the Japanese incense and 2 small, cobalt-blue, glass candle holders with 8" candles burning on the desk & window sill.
(Our little miss Hilary finds them especially "romantic" when she drops by my room for a nite cap on days off. She is, BTW, also a big Perry fan.) _________________ B C-ing U!

OK. Startin' it up again. ('Tho I don't mind hearing more Perry Como stories from Daved):
Otis Clay: "The Gospel Truth." Got him to autograph the CD at the Long Beach Blues Festival weekend before last. Have mercy, and thank you Lord! _________________ - BlueRunner |

It's "Otis Week." Today it's Otis Taylor's "Truth is not Fiction" CD. Found it in a used CD shop yesterday. Took me a while to figure out, "Hey, there's no DRUMMER on this CD." (Wouldn't YOU like to be able to play without the hassle of a drummer?). Which is particularly amazing on the cut "Walk on Water."
Let's see, got my Otis Rush, my Otis Spann, my Otis Clay ... Now if I could just find that old Johnny Otis album of my wife's. _________________ - BlueRunner |

I've been jamming out to Jing Chi Live at Yoshi's and a compilation of Robben's stuff I made for the drummer of my band. He has never heard Robben before. If it's not Robben I've been listening to this week, it's been a bunch of different Coltrane CDs.

Of late have been compulsively rotating two versions of "(That's Just) Love Sneakin' Up On You," the new version on Les Paul's "American Made - World Played" CD with Joss Stone and Sting on the vocals, and the other from Bonnie Raitt's first stab at it on a CD she cut in 1994 (I recently found the CD in the used rack locally). The song knocks me out. Apparently, however, all three vocalists are wearing tighter pants than I. Both Bonnie and Joss/Sting do it in D. I've worked up a version in B-flat. Please don't ask me to transpose it any higher. Dire consequences may ensue. _________________ - BlueRunner |

John Scofield - "That's What I Say"
A tribute to the music of Ray Charles. The guest artists are wonderful.
