In your experience, do you think this adversely affects the tonality of the guitar? I've heard conflicting opinions on this and would like to hear you guys' input.

More commonly called the "swimming pool" route, it was a practice of Fender in the 90's to route out a rectangular section under the pickguard so that any combination of humbucker/single coil pickups could be put in.

As far as the question goes, my main gigging strat has a swimming pool route.

Maybe it does but you won't be able to hear it... One of my best guitars I ever had was a Strat Plus with that routing

FWIW, my Strat is routed that way, although it was like that when I got, so I can't say if it changed the sound or not. It sounds great with Kinman pickups though. I just recently changed to humbuckers in that guitar, and really like the way it sounds now.

Thanks, Ian. I see a lot of kit guitars (Carvin, Warmouth, Stew-Mac) that come that way. I know that tone and sustain depend partly on mass, but I don't see how you could tell the difference in that small amount - unless you've got ears like Robben. Very Happy

I have a Strat Plus routed this way and it's the best sounding guitar I've ever had. It is also one of the heaviest guitars I've ever had, so the guitar's mass definately isn't an issue. Whether the routing makes a difference... maybe (hard to tell), but hey, it sounds good as it is.

It's also great to be able to periodically change pickup configurations and stuff other circuitry in without having to take to the guitar with power tools.

I know Ed Roman has a negative opinion on this... but then Ed Roman probably has a negative opinion about the fact the sky is blue.

Cool

Chris

I did it myself on a Squier Strat for the bridge pick up. No drastic change in the overall sound. But i will never do it on my 63 Fender strat.
Now how many of you know about the first guitar of JJ Cale ?A skeleton of an acoustic with PUPs . Great sound.
