Lately I have been seeing Robben playing a 59RI Les Paul. I hear he has a new Gold Top as well. What's up with this? Why has Robben started playing Les Pauls lately? _________________ -Butch Snyder

I think it's a side effect of the tour Robben did with Greg Allman.
I love the tone Robben gets out of a Paul. |

He was using the Les Paul quite a while before the GA tour. I imagine he was looking for a fatter tone for the Jing Chi stuff, and ended up liking the Les Paul for his stuff too. Just a guess. Maybe Daved could elaborate.

Thanks Bill for reminding me of the Jing Chi stuff. I heard some of it somewhere a while back and loved it. Intended to buy me some copies but somehow forgot (too busy?). |

Saw Robben last night playing with John Mayall. He was using a red Les Paul through the Zen Drive pedal to a Fender Super Reverb. Saw him a month ago with the same rig, except the LP was a sunburst. Caught myself thinking last night about how his tone is pretty much the same whether he's playing a LP or his Tele - two very different types of guitars.
As they say...it's in the hands!

Most of Jing Chi was the Tele. And remember, the Les Pauls have coil taps on them.
I remember at an Ojai clinic a couple years ago, Robben looking at a vintage LP someone had. He just dug the vibe. After championing modern alternative designs like the Fender and Bakers, he might have just wanted to go back to some roots. After all, he does use a 54 goldtop a lot for recording. _________________ There are no such things as wrong notes, there's only the look on your face.

He used the Sakashta on a couple tunes on the live Jing Chi, and when I saw Jing Chi here in Tokyo, he used the Les Paul a good part of the night.

You can tell that's an old photo - the Les Paul's got a scratchplate _________________ "Creativeness often consists of merely turning up what is already there. Did you know that right and left shoes were only thought up a little more than a century ago?" - Bernice Fitz-Gibbon 1894-1982 |
