Due to the unexpected job layoff yesterday (on my 50th birthday, no less), I am putting my Baker Jr. California Hollowbody up for sale. I am offering it here first, to the Robben Ford community, because there are people here that know and appreciate fine guitars, and I'd rather see it land in someone's hands in here than someone on Ebay looking for a bargain and a profit.

I am not going to list my price at this time, but if anyone is really serious about it, I will let it go for exactly what I paid a little over a year ago. If no interest, I will put it on Ebay with a higher reserve.

About the guitar- it's a real Gene Baker built guitar, s/n 356 (out of 872), and only 1 of 9 of this particular California model which features a Koa top and a palm tree cutout for the sound hole. It's in absolute mint condition, and comes with the famous orange hard case.

I posted 3 photos in the Online-Discussion Photos site in the members gear section http://www.dhenderson.com/PhpImages/categories.php?cat_id=6 and once kirk validates them, they'll be available for viewing.

For further inquiries, please contact me at jszabo17@comcast.net, or feel free to call me on my cell 978-457-5408.

Ouch! What a crappy thing to happen. And on your 50th birthday no less. But I'm not sure which is worse, losing your job, or being placed in a situation where you are forced to sell your guitar. That really sucks. The really sad part is, you'll probably find another job somewhere, but once that guitar is gone, you'll never find another one like it. On the other hand, guitars are just things, and they're not nearly as important as your own family. I wish you the best of luck, both with the search for a new job, and in selling (and hopefully someday replacing) your guitar. I wish I was in a position to be able to buy your guitar, but in fact, I'm selling my Baker too. If anyone is interested in a black Baker RF (with Robben's sig on the back and an RF sig truss rod cover), let me know.

Once again, best of luck to you. I hope things work out for you.

PS:

I was just thinking, instead of putting the guitar on evilbay, you might want to contact Dave at Overland Express and see about having him sell it on consignment for you. Just an idea.

Nicely put Bill, and I second your comments to Johnny.

Now I would love either guitar, in particular the black RF Baker, but I know I cannot push the boat out to what you guys will be asking. In fact I would propably give my right arm for it, but that would not be a wise thing to do as I wouldn't be able to play it Laughing

Anyway, best of luck Johnny, and best of luck to you both with the sales of your guitars.

Thanks, all, for the great replies.

I totally forgot to mention that my Baker also has Robben's autograph on the back of the headstock. He did a beautiful job signing it. And, if someone finds that undesirable, I'm sure it can be removed without any residual effect...

Yes, layoffs are crappy. I've experienced it before a couple of times. Incredibly, this time, I've gotten so much support including several calls from people with solid leads. In fact, I already have an interview on Monday morning!

Bluenote, Chicago is an awesome city, but I'm a manufacturing guy. I don't have the right stuff for sales...

Later,
~JZ~

Let me add another Happy Birthday to you JZ. I hate to hear about your job situation. I hope your interview goes well. As for not being a sales guy, From what I've seen, I think you could do it.

Cool Second that OUCH! Best wishes for success in landing another position, and quickly.

I'm torn about this. The guitar isn't something I can spring for right now, but having had the opportunity to handle it when you came by here on your way to one of the Clinics a while ago, I can state unequivocably that this is one great guitar, and anyone who buys it will be very happy.

At the same time, though, I'm convinced that if you it now, one day you'll very much regret it. To quote Bogart's Rick Blaine to Ingrid Bergman's Ilsa in "Casablanca," "Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but soon and forever." Are you sure you don't have something else you could sell. A child, perhaps?

Hang in there!

Johnny,

Crappy news, and a lousy time to tell you...

I'm sure that this will be the start for something better, because if they treat you this way you don't want to work for them. Good luck with the sale, hope it works for you.

Thank you all- in here, and in private emails, for the kind sentiments. I truly appreciate it, and it does help ease the pain... Very Happy

I must explain about the sale of my Baker. I'm not abruptly selling it due to the job loss, although the uncertainty of my financial future in this situation certainly solidified my position. But, only about a couple of weeks ago, after some soul searching about my musical ability, I've come to the realization that, I'm just a casual guitar player. When I bought the Baker a little over 15 months ago, I thought that it would be the "tool" that would propel me to a higher level. It hasn't. It probably would have and could have, if I had the time and energy, but my now past job took away that time and energy. And, that was acceptable because that job was what kept everything that my family needed to keep going...

Anyway, my beautiful Baker deserves to be in better hands. It needs someone who's going to play it, and nurture it, and play it to its absolute potential. And, it's not me, unfortunately...

BlueRunner- I appreciate your comments, especially the feeling that I'd regret the sale later on. I agree, but I really feel that that this fine instrument should be in better hands. I would be happier to see and hear it played by someone who can get the most out of it... Very Happy

That's the way it is...

And, again, thank you all... Cool

Later,
~JohnnyZ~

Capt. Kirk, please materialize those photos of my Baker that I beamed up in the O-D Photos site. I want people to see this fine piece of instrument!

Thanks,
~JZ~

Happy Birthday! Getting laid off stinks. Having to sell your guitar is even worse. Somebody, hire this man! Hang in there...don't sell it...maybe there is something much better around the corner! I sure hope so. Very Happy

Hey JZ!!!

Seems like only yesterday you were consoling me when I got layed-off...well, I gotta good gig now, and I hope something comes through for you soon.

Interesting, your thoughts concerning your Baker..."I've come to the realization that, I'm just a casual guitar player."

Gee, I'm just a half-@ssed keyboard player who likes to play guitar occasionally.

Your love of music is obvious...just keep doing what you can, when you can, and be grateful for it...and share it with other people.

And if it's any consolation, you're older than me (but not by much! Laughing )

Hang tough.

Smile

Andy
