I just saw this show last thursday night (11/3) in Milwaukee, GREAT show!!!
I've been a Mayall fan for decades, have seen The Bluesbreakers twice before at our Summerfest here (Mayall is always a great show) but I was very impressed by this last show.
This was the first time I've seen Robben Ford play and I'm hoping to see more of him in years to come. If anyone else has the opportunity to see this show, by all means do so. I'm hoping that it's filmed for an upcoming DVD?

we went to the show at Pudue univ fri nov 4. we thought we were an hour early but found out when we got in that we were right on time
(we forgot about the time change between NW indiana and southern In)
dah!!! We would have missed Eric Bibb.
after we watched him and Robben, during the intermission we thought we would go outside for a quick break. as we were heading back in we saw Eric and Robben selling CDs and talking to a few people....
I told robben I already had both Cds he was selling but that I enjoyed the show as always.
I must say he was extremely nice(as always) and signed a couple things for me.
I wished I would have asked him about a new CD but I didnt think of it at the time. (next time I'll be ready !!!!)
needless to say I missed a couple tunes by John Mayall...
after john mayall finished they were all back downstairs talking with people and signing autographs.
anyone who hasnt seen the show...if you have the opportunity, go see it.
It really was a good show.

Well not trying to brag or anything im pretty sure I am the closest person to Robben here. My ex uncle until he divorced my aunt. Last night I went to see this concert in Durham north carolina. I was given backstage passes where I brought my guitar and had him eric bibb and John Mayall sign it. Needless to say robben is one of the nicest guys I have ever met so incredibly modest. I stayed backstage for about half hour talking about life. He is just an incredible person with a great soul. And in my opinion one of the greatest guitar players of all time

nadel1415: Welcome aboard! Hope to read lots more posts from you.
By the way, the latest issue of Blues Revue has a nice review of a show that John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers did in Toronto in July, before Robben and Eric joined them this fall. _________________ - BlueRunner

Wow! What a way to start my first week back on employment!
Sunday night, the Portsmouth (NH) Music Hall. It was one of those perfect little hundred-something year old revived theaters, probably in the range of 450+/- seats. I was in the 3rd row, just right-of-center balcony. Great seats!
In preparation for this show, I bought Eric Bibb's latest cd a couple of weeks ago. Listened to it only once- it was good, but a little too slow and laid back for me. But, I figured he must be "better" in concert, and I was right. In fact, he was better than good. It seemed that, from the very first guitar and vocal notes, the audience was captured. The sound was just beautiful and crystal clear. And, what Eric did was slow and laid back, just like the cd, but it seemed so full and alive. I, and the rest of the audience, just listened so intentively, like kindergarten kids mesmerized by their teacher. I dare say that Eric stole the show right then and there. I almost wanted to hear just him the rest of the night!
Then, as everyone's already said, Robben came out with his Les Paul and Fender whatever amp, and beautifully complimented Eric on a song, maybe two, I forget. Made me think that these two could make a great album together...
And, as Eric walked off the stage, submitting it to the next artists of the evening, I'd wager that this theater hadn't felt such a tremble since the Roaring 20's...
Robben's turn. Damn, I wish I could remember the setlist as short as it was, but I cannot forget the burning solos Robben did on "It Don't Make Sense (You Can't Make Peace)". Simply heartfelt, and probably never can be reproduced. Amazing! I also have to give credit here to the Bluesbreakers. Great back up, and especially, nice comping from Buddy Whittington (Buddy, please talk to us!).
What more can I say about Robben's set? Nothing really that hasn't been said before. Captivating, alive, and just amazing...
Intermission. Met Eric Bibb in the lobby behind a counter selling his merch (I wished he had replicas of his hat 'cause I would've bought one!). He was one very gracious guy with a great attitude and great smile, appreciating all that came up to him...
Then, it was John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers' turn. The BB's, apparently "headed" by Buddy, started things off, getting the crowd pumped. Then, John races onto the scene as well as a jovial 70-year old man could. Sorry, even better! Great energy for a guy his age! Anyway...
The first few songs were actually a let down for me, and I sensed the audience felt that too. A bit too country-ish. The BB band even seemed bored playing those tunes. But then, the anti-war tune which blatantly criticizes the Bush administration, (whether you agree or not), got a rise out of the audience which grew exponentially after that. That's when the real Blues hit, and the balcony started a rockin'!
After a couple rousing tunes, including Buddy doing a flash medley of Led Zep recognizable favorites, it was time for Robben to come on stage and join in, and as expected, he phrased some great melodies and a solos. And, of course, Eric Bibb was invited on, and once again, he just blew the audience away with personality, and something not seen earlier, some great hoppin', stompin', hand-clappin', smilin', high energy, way to go out, un-freakin' believable, ...music... !!!
Finally, John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers capped it all of with a rousing encore of Room To Move. Great ending to a great night of great music!
And, got to meet Robben and John afterwards. And, of course, Eric was there greeting again...

JohnnyZ: So glad you got to see the RBR show. Now you know what I was talking about re Bibb's ability to grab an audience just with the warmth of his smile. Great review. Many thanks.
As for anyone on the Board who hasn't seen the show: I definitely put it in the "worth a 600-mile drive" category. _________________ - BlueRunner

THANKS for the cool review, JZ. It's GREAT !
Your perception of Eric Bibb's live performance vs recorded material is exactly the same way I felt after the show in St. Louis. He is so captivating onstage, he could make Carnegie Hall feel like a 300-seat theatre. Does anyone know if Eric Bibb has a live cd yet ? I don't think I've seen one anywhere.
Reading everyone's concert reviews is the next best thing to being there... So please, if you go to a show, share your experience with the rest of us. No sweat -- Just blurt it out _________________ Travelling by train of thought

To Heal The Pain is a great song; it's my favorite song on the new cd ! John Mayall changed some of the lyrics when they perfomed the song in St. Louis. I wonder if this song will be on the set list at West Point ???? And if it is, what will the reaction be? _________________ Travelling by train of thought

RW, if this song is on the set list at West Point, and I'd bet it will be, my guess is that John won't emphasize "the Bush Administration". The song doesn't seem to have the same impact without blatantly pointing the finger (index, or middle ) at GWB...
I too bought the Eric Bibb cd and i was actually disappointed. He is way better in person then on the CD. On the Cd it is so mellow and there isnt as much of him playing guitar which really dissapointed me.

I appreciate Eric's (new) cd much more now that I've experienced him live. It won't make my regular rotation in the car, which is where I mostly listen to music, but at least now I can listen to it every now and then and "see" him on stage in my mind. Damn, what a great smile, and a great acoustic sound!
