Hey guys,
Just ordered "Modes: No More Mystery" the Frank Gambale DVD, Ted Greene's Chord Chemistry Book, as well as "Sheets of Sound" by Jack Zucker. I'm really getting lost in the crazy world of jazz guitar but I'm child of pop and blues as well so I'm kind of trying to wet my feet enough to advance my playing but in a sense applicable to my personal tastes. I have heard great things about all 3 of those items and i think they will provide me with a lot of info to last me a while.
I think next on my list is Frank Gambales speed picking dvd, maybe a Scott Henderson Dvd, and Mark Levines Jazz Theory book.
Gotta love when the rents buy you books for extra schooling.

WOW, that's a lot of stuff!! I've heard FG's Modes dvd is great. Chord Chemistry chamged my life in 1979 and got me into studying jazz. I picked up sheets of sound and Mark Levines Jazz theory. They both look great but I have not had a lot of time to spend with them. Scott Henderson's videos on melodic phrasing and fusion guitar are outstanding--I highly recommend them. the most important thing is to actually crack this stuff open and work with them. They don't do you any good sitting in your collection. Good luck! |

OH I know, plan is to start DVD training at home on my own and then bring in Sheets of Sound for use with my Private lessons at school and have Chord Chemistry as a tool for new ideas and ways of looking at chords.
The books I kind of see as my new start at a practice context. I've been needed something that makes practice interesting and fun and yeah this may not always be that it sure helps to have something new. I'm sick of my reading studies from the Leavit Modern Method series (great book though.) : )

I ordered Sheets of Sound two months ago. It was the best investment I made. Great book with enough stuff to keep you busy for a life time. I spend two hours a day with it working through the linear, pentatonic and arppegio exercises with a metronome. My playing and facililty has greatly improved.

(check out some clips before sheets of sound)
