As it appears that no one else has done it so far, I'll shoulder the burden:
HAPPY THANKSGIVING, EVERYONE
For those of you who aren't 100% up to date on U.S. customs, our annual Thanksgiving Day is the last real family holiday. It hasn't yet been commercialized like every other holiday in America, it's still a traditional day for getting together with family, and best of all, it's always on Thursday. (It was President Richard Nixon who figured out that the oil companies could make more money on gasoline sales if all of our traditional national holidays were converted to Mondays, so that we'd get three-day weekends. So nowawdays, if Washington's Birthday, Memorial Day, or even the 4th of July, falls on some other day of the week, it's the Monday that's the holiday. Nixon did about three things right, e.g., visiting China; signing into law the nation's first environmental protection laws, and keeping Thanksgiving on Thursday. Oh yeah. Four things. He also met with Elvis and gave him an FBI badge for Elvis' collection.

Yesterday morning, my wife and I left for "Grandma's" house, which is in NY, normally, a 3.5 hr. drive. It was snowing quite heavily, and had already accumulated about 2-3 inches. No problem- we've done this many times before, and I've always loved driving in the snow. However, being the first snowfall of the season, most people on the roads forgot how to drive (cautiously and alert) in the white stuff. Plus, being the holiday, the road crews hadn't responded early enough so that all we had were the tire tracks from the cars before us to keep us on the straight and narrow. But, cars were spinning out left and right. It was incredible- I've never seen so many cars off the road. Luckily, every one we passed seemed ok, only the occupants very shaken. As well as I was driving, my wife was still very stressed (me too, but the manly man in me acted like it was nothing!). Finally, after almost 1.5 hours and only about 50 miles later, and no way of predicting what problems and delays lie ahead, we both agreed that turning around and heading back home would be the best option. I must mention that we were not planning on staying over at my Mom's. We usually only go for the day (it's much easier on everyone, especially my 91 year old mother who doesn't relax the whole time we're there). So, figuring how late we'd probably finally arrive, then only having only a few hours to spend before having to start heading back home, and then knowing how exhausted we'd be from the whole ordeal, disappointingly, we cut the trip short.
Trying to keep our spirits up as we made our way back home (and still witnessing multiple spinouts), we started thinking about whose Thanksgiving dinner we could crash (not seriously though)! After having fun with that, we started thinking about what we had in the freezer that we could cook up and call Thanksgiving dinner (because all restaurants in our immediate area were closed except for Chinese and McDonald's). Our festive dinner turned out to be chicken legs and thighs, mashed potatoes (that we were bringing to Grandma's), and Green Giant frozen peas (microwaved to perfection, of course!)! Dammit, I completely forgot about the can of cranberry sauce in the closet!
Later today, I'll be doing the weekly food shopping, and a 12 pound turkey is on the list!

JZ, I almost hate to tell you this, but we set tables outside and enjoyed the beautiful 75 degree weather. I deep-fried two turkeys and the family all had plenty. I'm glad you had a safe holiday. I hope everyone else did, too. Blue, I couldn't have done that one with a straight face. It was a great post.

I second that emotion, Roadwarrior. We refer to the Friday night dinner as Thanksgiving II.
Bluerunner, Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday, for exactly the reasons you describe...no gifts, no commercialism, just celebrate with family and dear friends.
Hope all of you enjoyed bountiful Thanksgivings...just having a quiet dinner with both my children was a wonderful treat. They even did the dishes! _________________ www.elizabethgage.com

There was a bit on TGP about how hot water and dishwashing soap would soften calluses, and for guitar players to avoid the clean up.
Gigged the night before, so I didn't have an excuse . Next gig is this Friday, so there's plenty of time to build 'em back up. The lady I'm seeing has a very close family, quite a change from my distant and disfunctional clan. It was really nice having a Beaver Cleaver Thanksgiving. Hope everyone else enjoyed theirs.
Only bummer was the weather was exceptional except for the annual Friday work off the turkey bike ride. Saturday was great again. Oh well. _________________ There are no such things as wrong notes, there's only the look on your face.
