I just have to say it's really great seeing all the wonderful responses to my original post about Mike Bloomfield. Like Robben, myself and many other guitarists, Mike was a major influence on our styles, as well as generating a love for the blues in all of us!

I've been a Bloomfield and Butterfield fan since I first heard those guys, late 60s, early 70s but never had the opportunity to see either. I wish I had.
Anyway, for those here who havent already seen, heard this I'll post it. Robben's tribute to Mike Bloomfield cd:

One day, during a 2 or 3 day festival at the Santa Clara Fairgrounds in central California circa 1968/69.
I was there to see, out of all the bands performing, mainly the Doors, Country Joe & the Fish, Donovan, and Deep Purple (the early psychedelic version, with Rod Evans singing).

In the mid afternoon, onstage came the Electric Flag, a group I was aware of but had never heard. I didn't know what to expect as the bunch of them hemmed and hawed and fumbled around the stage for a bit, distractedly looking around and mumbling with each other.

After a few minutes of this, one of the members (I learned later his name was Nick Gravenites) came downstage and announced from a vocal mic:
"Hey, Mike, if you can hear me? Come on, Man! It's time to play. Drop the chick and get your ass up here... now!"

Another minute went by when all of a sudden this lanky, frizzy haired, freak came running onstage, laughing, to grab up his guitar and then proceed to burn his memory into my head forever.

I was also impressed by the drummer, Buddy Miles (dressed in a Nehru jacket and looking, along with his huge sideburns, soooo planet-of-the-apes), as he sang lead vocals on "Them Changes".

The only time I ever saw Bloomfield, or the Electric Flag, live... but the day I became a fan of both. Great show!

Sadly, I never saw Bloomfield or Butterfield (must have seen Bishop six times, never all that impressed). I did see Arthur Brown, though, the single time I went to the old Fillmore. I went to see the Chambers Brothers, who were riding their big hit, "Time." On the bill were the local band It's a Beautiful Day and Arthur Brown. Beautiful Day were surprisingly hot. The stage for Brown had the band (keys, bass and drums) all jammed on one end, leaving about half the stage for him to flail around on. He came in, picking his way through the crowd (the old Fillmore was an odd, small place) with a tin helmet on, the horns on fire! Dang, that was weird.

I was a working guitarist in Philadelphia, which means I had no money at the time, and was working in a clothing store in Philadelphia to make a few dollars. One Saturday morning, the door opens and in walks Patti Santos.........absolutely took my breath away! We hit it off and she invited me to their concert with the Steve Miller Band at the Univ. of Pennsylvania that night. After the show, we went out for something to eat and spent the night together at my house in center city. She left the next day for a gig in Boston and I never saw or heard from her again.........but, as you can see, I never forgot her. I still remember exactly why we hit it off.......I mentioned that one of IABD songs was a favorite of mine........Let A Woman Flow.............Patti wrote it. Sadly, I learned recently that she died in a car accident years ago.

During one of the Mike Bloomfield discussion posts, "patocaster" recommended the Nick Gravenites CD, My Labors. I just wanted everyone to know that I agree wholeheartedly..........Mike Bloomfield's best recorded playing, for sure. Great tone, style, feeling, & technique. As most of you know from my posts, I've been a MB fan since the very beginning of my playing career, but thought that some of the playing on certain of his recordings was marginal...........sometimes great, other times just so-so. But, the My Labors CD really shows just how good Mike was.........definitely a stellar guitarist and the very best of his time. It's no wonder that guitarists from my generation, including Robben, have always acknowledged the influence Mike had on their playing. Mike's playing on My Labors will give you chills............a wonderful recording! P.S. It was a Christmas gift to myself!

When I stopped to meet bluerunner on my way to Ojai for Robben's clinic last March, he gave me a Mike Bloomfield biography to read. He also asked me to pass it along to anyone who might be interested. The book is titled Michael Bloomfield, If You Love These Blues- An Oral History. It also contains a cd with rare tracks.

Anyone interested? And, whoever I send it to must promise to pass it along to someone else...
