In summary folks: Great Concert but the wrong setting Crying or Very sad

Robben played second in a duo concert that was promoted as a Jazz/Fusion gig. First bass extraordinair Richard Bona played, and although I do not really like his mix of ethnic and fusion, he put up a great show. He stoped playing at 11 pm so after that a lot of people already went home. This continued during Robben's show. I think because of the fact that Robben isn't really playing Jazz/Fusion during this tour. So the promotion of this concert was wrong.
Robben did a great gig, but one could notice the frustration of some technical problems. Daved had to make overtime on the stage because of a failing bass amp and (I think) some trouble with Robben's Tele. But the decreasing number of spectators even embarrassed me. This had nothing to do with the quallity of the band or the songs. I think a lot of people just didn't know what to expect when Robben started at 11:30 pm (!!!) I hope Robben's management will take this in concideration.
And for the music: What can I say folks!!! Those who dare to say something bad about Badge again will be shot. Survivers will be shot again!
I hope Robben will have more fun tonight in Hellendoorn. He deserves it!!

Hi Left Bender , i am so glad not having traveled to Dam. When i go to Robben Ford gigs , i just want my full load of Robben's Band.
Sure it looks like the mega wrong setting : I've seen Richard Bona with the Zawinul syndicate , quite impressive player, but it's the same for me i don't like his mix of ethnic & fusion.
Also it reminds me of Robben in Cannes : the first act was Lucky Peterson, he tore the house down, then during the intermission 3/4 of people went home..................So you are moving to Hellerndoom this night???

If my forehead, my throat, my eyes and my nose calm down i'll try Italia.

Unfortunately I'm not able to go this evening............... Crying or Very sad
But as a RF fan I've got my portion of fine music. During the encore I was able to polish his shoes (who where black boots, (for Liz..)) and while he was doing Lovin' Cup he blew my brains out with his Tele. Amazing!!!!!

I like Richard Bona, I have seen him with the Pat Metheny Group and this was really good, but to mix him with Robben is definitely not a great idea.

My favorites are the two-tones (the French man calls them pimp shoes...I do NOT agree) and the boots that are the color of good cafe latte. As for socks, I prefer the ones with cute pictures, but then I have a foot fetish (along with so many of my other idiosyncracies!)

Lobster sweetie, I hope you are feeling better. You need to come back to sunny California.... Even Ahhhhnold wants you back.

Hopefully the crowd tonight in Hellendoorn will be more Robben minded.
You just pointed out the exact reason I didn't want to go to the
Melkweg in Amsterdam. Exclamation

I'll let you have a share of enthousiastic feedback 2morrow.

Don't understand.

My wife plays the CD every evening when she feeds our baby boy, so I have been listening to it regulary. I've grown to it. Most songs are really OK (like Badge) and some are suberb like Me and mY woman. I am begining to feel about it like I feel about Supernatural (which I am particularly fond of).

Some songs are dead boring and remind me of Blue Moon (which I'd rather forget).

But whatever the songs may be, that guitar sound and playing is JUST FANTASTIC!

Yeah, I had some major problems with the bass rig, but trooper Dewayne played the second half of the show thru a D.I. with a smile on his face and chops in his fingers.

I took the bass head on the bus with me, along with some tools, and repaired it during our drive the next day (There are things about those Trace/Elliot heads that I have run into before & consider to be poor design). So Dewayne was happy at the next show in Hellendoorn and the gig went very well.
Robben was in good humor and the full house seemed to enjoy the show.("Hello" to Maroose [spelling?]. It was nice meeting & talking with you.)

The Tele was fine. Excess & spontaneous guitar swapping was more a matter of Robben making spur of the moment setlist changes to play more to the unique crowd.

The "co-billing" of the Amsterdam show was purely a promoter thing. We really were even unaware that that was what was happening till we got there. You are right in that it was an excellent show, but on 2 very different levels. From a stricktly 'business' aspect, it paid off big time... totally sold out and great bucks were made for those who deal with that end of things.
The way we in the Robben camp look at it, if Robben had performed first, then Richard would have played to half the room as the blues enthusiasts would have left. Those things happen.
The purely Robben shows have been going very well, with high attendance, enthusiastic crowds and sometimes even double encores.

BTW, early reports show Keep On Running as selling extremely well. Some of Robben's best figures in years. Another major station out of San Diego has added Robben to their playlist and San Francisco's KFOG is playing Robben regularly. This CD really seems to be developing a very nice buzz about it.

Daved,

Thanks a lot for your explanation about the Amsterdam performance. I enjoyed every minute of Robben's performance. Beeing a musician myself often has the disadvantage that you see (and hear) everything that goes wrong during a performance. But hey, shit happens all the time! Luckely 99,9% of the crowd doesn't notice it.
I'm glad to hear Robben's album is selling fine. He gets the credits for it he deserves!!
Hoping to meet you sometime!

Yours,

Lefty
