Anyone listened to this new Carlton album? What are your thoughts? I've got mine, but I'd like to hear yours ... Cool

Larry playing his version of rock instrumentals!!!?

I have had my copy for 2 or 3 months now, and have given it plenty of "airing". I have to say it is very different from his usual stuff (I love "Last Nite" & "On solid Ground") including Saphire Blue.

Some of the tones are glorious as expected, and playing to match, and I have to say I take my hat off to players who try something different. There is even one track (#4) that is reminiscent of Scott Lerner type phrasing and tone, infact it could be Scott Smile

I like it, but I have to also say there are a couple of tracks that just did not cut it for me, both playing and tone wise (what am I saying Shocked

). All in all this CD is a must for any Larry C fan.

The Japanese import version is $37.85 at cduniverse. A non-import version is currently on pre-order sale for $13.29. The import is noted to have one bonus track...

Ok, so now, with the Salt man's offer, the price difference of the Japanese import is about $8 more than the US domestic version, say $10 or so with the extra postage from Aussieland. While I hardly consider the extra bonus track on the import worth an extra ten bucks, perhaps there's improved sound quality that would push me towards the import? I only say this because the sound quality of the one and only Japanese import I own, The Dark Side of the Moon made in the 1980's, kicks every other domestic remake copy of that same album I've bought over the years (at least 2, maybe 3) by far, including the rereremastered (2002/03) 30th anniversary edition which is at least 10-to-15+ technology-enhanced years later than the Japanese import. I still wonder why this is- why the Japanese model sounds so much better, and why those newer domestic ones have barely improved from the first US domestic release, and still not as good as that import?

Is this is still the case, that imports are better sound quality? If so, why?

I think I will pass on this one from Larry, either Japanese pressing or USA version. The slices I heard on his website are enough to make me spend my money elsewhere, which is really frustrating because I want to like everything he does because he can be so damn good. But I have been burned buying his CDs before (most recently Fingerprints). Really curious what the rest of you think once you listen a few times. What did you think, nineacres? Be honest...

I managed to get a copy and I am now listening to it and I have to say that (at first impressions) I am a bit, may I say....dissappointed. Embarassed

I hate to say it, but it sounds like someone else is playing, not Larry.

I saw Larry recently at the Blue Note in Milan and he was just his old, usual fantastic self, hence I am convinced that he is not yet sufferring from some geriatric illness.

ON firewire his bendings, licks, feel and especially tone sound a bit....dry and lifeless?!? (I don't know if thats the most appropriate word, I don't mean to be too hard)

After a first listen, I was more impressed at with his latest "smooth jazz" stuff like "Deep into It" or the Fourplay cd's.

Maybe I just need to grow on it...who knows.

After all, I did have a bit of a shit day today.

Maybe I was too hard....sorry Larry, I love ya man. I was simply comparing it to his usual high standard work. Don't get me wrong, Firewire has it's moment as well, especially on the funky tracks.

Perhaps we expect too much magic each time Robben and Larry play.

Man...they must feel the pressure....
