Dave

In 1991, Luckily, I came across a vintage dealer who new Alexander Dumble and got me in direct contact with him. After the initial conversation, I signed the contracts he forwarded me and purchased a brand new Overdrive Special - I live in Florida now and the hurricanes destroyed alot of computers and paperwork and equipment... I'm wondering if you might have anyway of knowing his contact number? Hoping there is a chance since I am a previous customer - he might consider building me the model I lost in the storms...

Any info for contact or suggestions on who I can call to drop my name would be greatley apprciated!

Thanks in advance if you can help...

Well......next question. I'm a very unusual player influences Jeff Beck, Dave Gilmour, Frank Zappa, Micheal Hedges, SRV to name a few. Its a mad blend, dunno why, but I've just ended up playing this way. If you can imagine big open chords very clean played with an acoustic sense, for lead work very much like Gilmour but with a tad more dexterity. Im in no way saying "Hey Im this good!" but.......Ive not yet found an amp that will do it for me. Ive done Marshalls (living in the UK this is easy), Fenders (my fave twin was stolen), Bogners (XTC is good as is the Shiva), Soldano (Big and wide sounding) but not one of them has hit the spot.

So............Im curious to know if Mr. Dumble would be interested in having a stab at building an amp for me. I appreciate that every man and his dog wants a Dumble. But and I beleive this to be significant, I dont want to copy someone elses tone, therefore I need someone who "Knows his onions".

Can anyone help put me in the right direction as to asking him?

If so would you mail me, as I get the impression that Mr. Dumble wont want his contact details all over the place.

I'll tell you something chaps (and chapette)...this forum is great, no attitudes, just people helping other people, If only the rest of the planet was the same.

Thanks

After many years at the address on Marmion given in BlueLob's post (A 2 story house in Pasadena, on the grounds of a 200 year old abbey owned by Jackson Browne... very atomospheric with many years of fond memories for me of hanging out with Dumble in his 'laboratory' testing tubes, playing guitars, tweaking amps, and just pretty much playing 'mad scientists' till the break of dawn), Alexander moved to a new location out in 'the valley' last year for health reasons (A very nice, newish place and location with a 15 foot ceiling and very nice acoustics in one room, which he plans on converting to a studio).

Alexander has told me that, for the most part, he does not build the OD Specials anymore. I will mention your story to him next time I see him but I doubt that he wants to commit anymore to building another amp for sell.
I know that, even when Carlos Santana switched over to Dumble amps 2 years ago, Alexander wouldn't build him a new Overdrive. He DID custom tweak a couple of second hand OD's that Carlos bought and, as with Robben, Jackson, Larry, and many other OD owners, he is happy to maintain and repair the amps he HAS built, but he really doesn't want to get back into building new ones.

He is a very private man, so I do not pass on his personal contact info without express approval directly from him. Sorry.

Dave - If its not too much too ask, Could you forward my info to Mr. Dumble?

If he looks at the contracts from 1991, He can confirm my info and that I am indeed a previous customer. He can then make the decision to possibly contact me...

You effort and help is greatfully appreciated!

Joe, please re-read my post (It appears I was editing & expanding my post at the same time you posted your reply, so there may be more info in it now that wasn't there when you first read it).

As I mentioned, I will pass your post and contact info onto him when next we get together.

Wow.
Howard Dumble built me a little combo amp based on a Fender Rhodes piano chassis that he got surplused out of Fender back in I'm guessing 1970? Little shop on E Cliff drive in Santa Cruz California. I bought an Altec 417-8C from him too and built the cabinet. He was making equipment for Jackson Browne then mostly.

Man, I new he'd hit the big time if he could just stay alive!

I hadn't heard hide nor hair of him ever since. I was making these horrible little practice amps at the time that never went anywhere.

I miss him. I'll have to look him up one day.
