While in LA for the NAMM show, I stopped in at Bernie Grundman Mastering to visit some friends, and found out that they just did a live "direct to disc" recording with Neil Larsen, Tom Brechtlein, Jimmy Haslip, a couple of horn players, and guess who on guitar! The project was recorded digitally in 16/44 format for CD, 24/96 format for DVD Audio, on 30ips analog tape for mastering to vinyl. All 3 formats will be available. Although the project was originally intended to be a Robben album, due to contractual problems, it will come out as a Neil Larsen album. Don't worry though, Robben is all over it. Robben recorded with a Les Paul, a Fender amp (the Super?) and "some kind of overdrive pedal". I believe it is due for release in May.
I was very fortunate to be able to audition the recording in both digital and analog format. I think everyone here is going to be very pleased.

Sounds awesome. What kind of music is it?
Where was the vinyl lathe when they were doing it? Isn't that the definition of "direct to disk"? No intermediate storage.
Is Bernie still around? I have always loved his mastering. As much as Doug Sax and others contributed to the audiophile market, I always loved the sound on albums Bernie worked on. _________________ There are no such things as wrong notes, there's only the look on your face.

I got a kind of Jing Chi vibe from some of the tracks, but it's basically the blues/rock/jazz thing that Robben does so well.
The lathes are in the room but they didn't cut anything directly to lacquer. I guess I should have said direct to digital/analog. The recording was done with 12 mics, no eq. Just a bunch of really talented musicians doing what they do best.
Yes, Bernie is still going strong. They opened another mastering facililty here in Tokyo some years ago and I do some freelance maintenance work for them there.

Thanks Bill for the good news. Can't wait for the moment when all these notes will hit my brain. Also i am very pleased to listen to Neil Larsen.
Last week I was lurking some of my tapes & liked very much the way he plays & interact, and i was just asking to myself : where is this guy and what is he up to ????
Now not too long ago someone gave me a Tommy Bolin CD (these are only available through the web site) and guess who is playing bass with a huge "moustache" ? Mr Haslip. The cover picture is from a live concert.
Funny how a lot of people relate to other people who relate to other people ........... Planet Earth is tiny as a village sometimes.

OOOOOOOOOoooooooooooooooh I can't wait!!!!!
Thanks Bill. I feel another episode of "wishing my life away" coming on.
So it's kind of like Jing Chi in style. How about Robben's tone? Any vocals?
Thanks again Bill.
Cheers,

It's an instrumental album, and Robben is using a Fender amp with, I assume, the Zendrive pedal, so the tone is not the Dumble tone. But as we all know, Robben can make anything sound good.

I believe Robben used his Zen & his Super Reverb. I wasn't there, so I can't say for sure, and I don't know which guitars he used.
However, I do know that Robben called me the night before the session to discuss possibly using the Dumble. Both his Dumble heads, however, were out at Alexander's being serviced so Robben told me, "That's OK, I have my Super Reverb with me and that, plus the Zen pedal, will be fine for this session".
And BlueLob, as for Neil, he keeps himself plenty busy. He was the 'other' keyboard player on the last couple (that I know of... maybe more) Gregg Allman & Friends tours.
Then, when I was out with the Allman Brothers Band tour last summer, Neil showed up at one of the shows and when we talked he told me he was touring with Michelle Branch.
And then, i am often running into him in studio-session situations.
Not only a great player, he is also a very mellow, very nice person. _________________ B C-ing U!

Aha! I got it! That's the secret of the mysterious Dumble sound- an oil and filter change every 3 thousand notes!

Hey Bill it was great meeting you at NAMM! |
Thanks Captain. It was nice to finally meet you and Scott at the show (and Alf too), even though we didn't get much of a chance to talk. At least we managed to sell a couple of Zendrives.
