JZ, I love live recordings, but I'm beginning to notice a difference in the quality of live music at venues where taping is allowed. When the sound board is being programmed for the tapers, and not for the paying audience, this is a problem. I have several bootlegs that sound better than the live "house" sound. It's disappointing to see this going on. |
Oh, I agree 100% A live show should always accomodate the live audience first and foremost. And, what you described immediately reminds me of the Allman Bros. show I saw at a hockey rink in Manchester, NH last summer where the live sound was just horrible. I bought the "instant live" cds which were available 10 minutes after the show ended, and the 45 minute ride home wasn't long enough- the show I just heard in person and was disappointed in sounded absolutely great in my car (my measure of sound quality)!. And, instant lives, I'm pretty sure, are recorded through the sound board, which explains the sound quality of this instant live. Whether or not this took away from the sound quality throughout the arena, I'm not sure, but tend to doubt. I think this particular place just plain sucked for sound anyway.
Also, note that tapers I was talking about are the people who bring in their own equipment (where allowed)- some recording using a laptop, and some using a high tech recording machine. They set up their stereo microphones on a high stand in a location that doesn't (shouldn't) interfere with anyone's view, hit the record button, tweak it a bit, and whatever they get, they get. Then they go home and spend hours putting the show's "information" through several hardware and/or software processes to refine the audio to high quality. And, finally, they make their work available for trade among the "tapers community" for others to enjoy. At least, that's what I've found so far...
And, I really hope this isn't the cause for some disappointing sounding live shows... |
