My favorite track off my favorite overall Robben playing. I wish he and Russell Ferrante had kept at it. That album for me is right up there with "The Royal Scam" for what I like to hear for jazzy bluesy guitar playing.

That song holds a very special place in my heart--it's the first song I ever heard Robben's playing (around 1981-82). I don't remember whether I heard it on the first Yellowjackets record or on a demo tape called "The Monsters are Here" which was given out by GIT as a way of showcasing their instructors. Interestingly, both versions of the song are on the CD re-issue of the first Yellowjackets record.

When I first heard this song, Robben's playing blew me away! This is also the first Robben Ford song I ever learned to play. A couple of years later when I moved to LA to go to GIT, I got to play with Robben a bunch of times in Friday labs and got to play this song with him. Lastly, I recall going to see Robben at the Baked Potato win 1983 (along with Russell Ferante). I stayed for both sets and they did the song in each set--it was just KILLER (BTW, Robben was playing a '58 or '59 ES-335 Dot Neck at the time through this new amp he just got--a Dumble!).

Anyway, Imperial Strut is just a wonderful song and, in my mind, it defines Robben in his Yellowjacket years. Anytime I listen to it, it takes me back and puts a big smile on my face!
