I have looked everywhere on the internet for the answer to the following questions, when I realized I would get the most correct info right here!
so if anyone can tell me the answers,i would appreciate it.

first off what does the TD mean on a gibson es-335-td ??

secondly, who on this forum have played both an es-ee5 and es-336(smaller version)??

what did you think of each?

also I have heard that the trapeze tailpiece is ok for jazz but gets out of tune faster when playing blues ... any comments on that?

thanks

Hi Maxima
TD on a 335 is a superfluous appointment! It means Thinline Double (hence TD) pickup, however the 335 was only available in thinline with two pickups so the TD has always been forgotten about.

I've never played a 336, but my 1966 335 has a trapeze and I have no more tuning issues than on any other guitar and I play some pretty heavy blues/rock. They're very versatile guitars, almost as versatile as a tele IMHO.

Hope this helps

Ron

Walking By Myself, track 12.

That's my 335 in full flight, both pups for most but flipping to the back for the last half of the 2nd solo.

I'm essentially a "335 guy". I have and have had a number of these guitars. Here's some thoughts:

I think that the 335 is one of the most versitile guitars out there. You can play just about anything with them. I have a '93 dot neck reissue with Fralin Unbucker pickups with coil taps (this is my main guitar). I also have an Ibanez AS 200 (like Scofield's) with SD Jazz and JB pickups, also with coil taps. I love having the tap capability with these guitars. By taping one of the pickups and not the other, you can get a really cool Telecaster sound. Great for funky rythm playing.

I also have a vintange '67 ES 335 with a trap. tail piece. When I got it, I was planning on doing the stop tail conversion. I decided not to because the guitar sound SOOOOO fantastic. Totally Freddie/BB King. I have no problems with tuning due to the tail piece. In the late 70s-early 80s, I had an ES 330 with the same tail piece. I converted it to one of the heavy duty ones like on an ES 175. That kind is more stable and gives a little better sustain. I still love the sound of my '67 and would not change a thing.

I have played the 336s and they are wonderful. They do sound more open than the 335s, but still quite similar. They have a carved top as opposed to a laminated top. I decided to get a PRS Hollowbody II instead becuase they sound even more open (they are totally hollow on the inside). I LOVE that guitar too.

If you see a common thread here, it's because if it's got an "f hole," I love those things!

Funny, I chose to buy an Ibanez Artist AS-73 over a Squire Esprit because of the "f-holes". I enjoy the sound and resonance of my Ibanez, unamplified, because of it's open body. And, the Ibanez is a hundred bucks cheaper, which makes it feel even better... Very Happy

Filmore: A while ago I offered any board member who wanted one a copy of my CD free. Several members took me up on the offer, if you send me your address I'd be happy to send you one provided you let me know what you think! Very Happy

I have both - an '63 block reissue 335 '99 historic:

and a CS-336 (not sure of the year, I bought it second hand in January):

I'm not really a big guy (5"9') and find the 336 much easier to get on with - sometimes it feels a bit like I'm wrestling with the 335. Tonewise the 336 is much closer to a Les Paul than a 335 to be honest. That hollow "chink" (god it's hard to describe sounds!) isn't really there with the 336, it sounds more solid than anything else. I love the guitar really. Plus it is light as a feather compared to my Les Paul. Great guitar.
