I want one! Check out his hands. When he relaxes his right hand, it goes all the way across that 335. Those are some serious meat hooks!

His hands were huge. I shook hands with him once after a show and his hand dwarfed mine - I felt like a little kid. And look how small his 355 looks compared to how it looks on other people. Big man and big tone.
Did you catch the guy behind the drummer in one shot - wearing some kind of armadillo and antler hat - weird. |

Ooops! It was a 355, wasn't it? I saw the Varitone switch after I posted. I did see that hat. That's pretty strange. Did you notice the little guitars on the shirt? I swear I believe Freddie could have done without a mike, too. He had some kind of a voice. He kept looking back at the band during the song. From his expression it looked like somebody wasn't playing what he wanted. I sure would have hated to get him mad at me!

No one was better than Freddie. I can't think of anyone that I'd rather see live. What a player and what a singer!
If you get a chance, check out the video/dvd of Freddie on 'The Beat - 1966'. These are clips of Freddie taken from what looks to be a regional television show from Texas in the 60s. Freddie was a frequent guest and this is a compilation of those performances. Great stuff ,when everyone wore a tie. And the 'house' band was led by noneother than Gatemouth Brown.
Must've been a great time to live in Texas. I envy you, Telefunk! |

Paul - If you search You Tube for "Freddie King" there is one other clip, with Gatemouth, from the Beat. Not very long but they trade some cool licks. So sad that both these guitar giants are no longer with us. There are still a lot of good pickers in Texas, but none like these two gentlemen (and Albert Collins, too)!
Frank - I noticed that glare, too! And the shot of the piano player - he looked really guilty at one point like he had hit a real brick or something. Very cool shirt - and this was one of his more understated outfits from that era. |

I just ordered The Beat - 1966 from Amazon. I can't wait to see it. I bought a VCR DVD-R recently and I was dubbing old VHS tapes from TV programs and I ran across one with Eric Clapton and Robert Cray on David Sanborn's old late night show. It's a great performance, too.
