Funny you should say that - it's not sounding as bad as it did at first listen. However, I still have reservations about Larry's guitar tone. I feel it's just a bit too "OK everybody, let's shake off the cool-jazz image", if you see what I mean. I read that he let the producer even choose his guitar\amp settings for this CD. Well all I can say is: "Larry, please declare your guitar & amp strictly off limits to all such persons in the future". Please.
By the way, has anyone seen his "Live in Montreux" (1997) DVD? He plays a Tele for much of the show and a Les Paul for a few numbers. Now THAT is how Larry should sound and play. He is just amazing on that show. Delicious blues\jazz licks all the way through and the band is phenomenal! Get it if you can - I saw it on eBay and snapped it up. From the looks of it, it seems a Korean production. Anyone? _________________ "Creativeness often consists of merely turning up what is already there. In my unofficial capacity as resident grumpy old codger, I guess I should jump in here and say that I think Fire Wire is the worst thing Larry has ever done. Letting some hip hop producer control everything was just plain dumb. I personally think that they should burn all the masters, recall all the CD's and give everyone their money back. Frankly I think Larry is getting lazy in his old age. The last couple of shows I went to (I stopped going after that) he spent half the show standing in the back smoking while someone else soloed. A lot of people, myself included, were not too pleased at having spent $100 to watch him smoke.
Rumor has it that his latest shows have been quite good, and I certainly hope that's true, otherwise he'll never see any more of my money. Maybe he'll learn something at the upcoming jams with Robben.
