One of my all time favourite songs, Cal. Leslie also played it on Woodstock in '69. There he used a Les Paul Junior with one P100 bridge pick-up. Amps were Marshall.

Umm...., I don't think there were P100's back in '69. It would have been the original P90.
Oh,BTW, I think this is my first post here, I've been registered for a while, but just lurking. My name is Dave, and I'm a guitar player. I live in Woodstock,NY. Hi, all of you! |

Welcome to the Forum, Dave. I hope you'll like it here. You are absolutely right about the pick-up on the Les Paul Junior. I've checked and it must be a P90. That makes it even more awsome how Leslie West sounds on these early recordings.

Big amps, turned up loud. I think his picking technique had a lot to do with his tone, also. |

Thanks for the info guys. My post was poorly worded however, and I was wondering what Leslie West was using in New York at this gig.

Sorry, Cal, but I don't think I can be of much help. I had my hands quite full that night, so I must confess that I wasn't paying a whole lot of attention to Leslie's gear as he had his own tech there to take care of him, and we placed his tech's work area stage-left, over on Brian's (Warren's tech) side of the stage, opposite my world on stage-right.
I do remember that he used a smallish combo amp of some sort, brought in by his tech. And, that he ran his guitar thru a wireless pack which transmitted into some F/X over in his tech's world which were then hardwired out to the amp itself. I remember Brian speaking of his amazement/disappointment a while back when Leslie had sat in at a Govt. Mule show and used a Zoom setup. But I really can't tell you what processing he used this time.
I must also confess that to my humble ears, though he played well, his guitar tone was much thinner and shriller than I ever would have expected from his recorded material. _________________ B C-ing U!

Leslie West should never be heard through anything but his dual Marshall stacks, which he tends to tweak (turn up the volume!) several times during a show... |

Thanks Daved. Shame about that thin tone - for me, that was what put the Mountain into the band, not just a big guy. |
