I very briefly spoke with Robben over the phone today.
He says it looks like Samuri Sam"s will finally open this weekend so the first jam show should be Monday night. Unfortunately I will be returning from an Allman Brothers weekend gig this, so I don't think I'll get back in time to help him with this show.
However, I will be doing the Bakersfield gig next week and his Florida gigs in 3 weeks.
He says the band for B-field will be Gary Novak and Andrew Ford.
He will be using the Dumble rig.
In Florida his band will be Hilary Jones and Roscoe Beck... and he will use his ZD thru provided amps. _________________ B C-ing U!

So...looks like Robben will be coming to the UK later in the year - great news!!
Any idea where abouts in the UK robben will be gigging? I guess as he's here for ten days he will not only gig at his usual London Jazz Cafe venue, but also venture up north maybe to manchester (I'm hoping so anyway as thats where I live!) Any ideas?

Great news ! I haven't seen a show with Roscoe since The Bottomline closed down a few years ago.
I have to give Roscoe's CD a plug here. "Walk On" is a great CD. I'd love to hear them play a live jam of "Cotton".... but they'd need a harp player to do that song.....
I'm also looking foward to seeing Hilary play again ! The T.B. Bluesfest will be my 10th RF concert !
Lately, I've been reading about one of the first blues drummers, Ms. Johnnie Mae Dunson. She's an unknown, 85-year-old Chicago Blues legend who has composed more than 800 songs. She started playing drums on Maxwell Street in the 1940s. She has written songs for both Muddy Waters and Jimmy Reed, and she is a great lyricist. Aside from Hilary, I think Ms. Dunson is one of the very few female drummers in Blues.
She plays guitar too. Here's a recent video clip of Ms. Dunson playing guitar and singing. She still got a great voice at 85 ! God bless you Ms. Dunson ! :

Daved, regarding the Hollywood gigs....
Do you know what to expect from 'Smoke', who Robben is playing with? The website indicates it's a jam with special guests. Just don't know if it's a blues band, fusion, or ? The San Luis Obispo Blues Society is advertising EC Scott & Smoke w/ Jerome Washington Express in May. Wonder if this is the same 'Smoke'.
Let's hope that where there's Smoke, there's fire. I'm sure Robben will add some heat. |

Hi Daved,

Still any chance to see the man has to be taken!

Paul,
I was there Monday night and saw 'Smoke'. Jimmy Earl is on bass and Mike Landau is on guitar. I don't know the drummer or keyboard player's names. They're calling it Jam night and that's exactly what it was - lots of jams. They played Oasis and I heard that during the second set (I left half way through it) the did a couple of Mike's tunes. It was a great time and I'll try to post a few pics this weekend.
If you're in the area, you need to make it to this club on Monday night and check this out. _________________ "Somebody's got to make some music around here." - Robben Ford |

Thanks for the report, J! I'm planning on taking a Tuesday off and going down to check out the jam. I lived in LA from '79 to '87, and I can't count the times I regret missing some of the great music being played in LA at that time. Not just Robben, but Hollywood Fats, etc. Ignorance is a crime!
This is a great opportunity to catch a local jam session with world class talent.
Thanks again!!! |

Let me know when you're going to be there and we can meet up. I'm going to be there as often as I can.

Speaking with Robben at the B-field show the other night, my understanding at this point is that the central Cal/Yoshi's band will be Gary Novak on drums, Andrew Ford on bass, and Greg Mathieson on keys.
And for the Seattle/Portland shows he's looking at Gary and Andrew plus Mike Landau on guitar. _________________ B C-ing U!

Gee, I don't know which I'd rather see. Robben inspired by Greg's incredible comping, or exchanging melodic fire with Mike.
Any idea on the material? Keep on Running has been out for awhile. It'd be great to get a cross section of his stuff. _________________ There are no such things as wrong notes, there's only the look on your face.

Wow! Would love to hear Robben and Mike Landau together in Portland - has that been confirmed? I'm bringing my brother to the show, he is a guitar player and is looking forward to hearing Robben play. If anyone is coming up for the Portland show, come a day early and catch some of Portland's best blues/jazz players at the Candlelight on Monday night(DK4). |

Yes, JD, I spoke with both Robben and Mike tonight whilst getting them set up for tonight's SafSam show. Mike confirmed his being in on the NW run and, after discussing some production info I needed for those dates, Mike and I exchanged numbers so I can contact him about picking up his gear when those shows get closer.
So, unless something drastic happens between now and then Mike will be the other guitar for all the NW Robben shows. _________________ B C-ing U!
