Thanks for clearing that up Daved.
Just curious, what does Robben do about moving his gear around when you're not available?

No problem.
As for gear transport, if it's a tour/road situation, we try to get a hold of Jeff Rivera (Robben's tech of the 6 or 7 years before me... [Wow! I just realized it's now been over 7 years with Robben for me, myself... I believe I started with him around March of 1999]).
If it is a local thing (like SafSam's or M.I. or local recording, etc.) that I can't do, then we often have Lon Cohen's Studio Rentals (where we store Robben's gear) in North Hollywood do the cartage.
BTW, for you artists out that way, Lon's has an extensive and well maintained selection of gear for rent, a team of very knowledgable & experienced personnel who do cartage and stage gear setups, and an in-house bench tech for those who need maintenance or set-ups done.

jconstant wrote:
The music is mostly bluesy jams. For example, I heard Robben right before a tune say, "Let's do that thing in Ab. You know, it goes kinda like <and then plays a bar of something>" and then off they go. The first night they played one song that we all know, Oasis from Tiger Walk. I think they may have played a couple of Mike's tunes too, but I don't know his stuff well enough to tell you. Also, I remember Robben calling out a tune (don't know if it had a name or not) and Jeff yelled out, "charts!" as they all searched for their chart of the song he called.

The crowd is really into the music. Lots of people are there to see Robben but everyone is digging the music in a big way. The crowd is very reactive and enthhusiastic. The first night I was there was only a few days after they'd been open so I don't know if the word was out enough. But last week, the second time Robben was there, the place was close to packed. There was a lot more energy and it felt like you were somewhere where great things were happening.

I hope that helps. Again, if you can make it there, its worth the trip!

Thank you ! Very Happy

Robben confirmed to me that he will NOT be at SafSam's next week because of travel conflicts from Florida's shows.

I believe he WILL be there on the 15th under a new band name (Sorry, I should have grabbed one of the club fliers 'cause now I've forgotten what the new name was). Robben said the "Smoke" name "just wasn't working" for him. I'll check the SafSam website. Maybe it's listed there under their "Upcoming events".

BTW, tonight's featured bandmembers (I consider that to be the one's at soundcheck, though I'm sure others will sit in... I know Gabe, Pat Ford's son/Robben's nephew, was hanging out and I believe will do some guest drumming tonight) are Jeff Babco on keys, Andrew Ford on bass, Bernie Dressel's (from Brian Setzer's Big Band) brother on drums (can't remember his first name... sorry) , Mike Landau and, of course, Robben.

Thanks for the heads-up about next week, Daved.

I'm about to head over there tonight for the first set (man, now they're starting the first show at 10, instead of 9 - that's hard on a working stiff like me).

Looks like they've changed the name of the group to One Taste, at least according to Sam's website. Not sure what I think of that one just yet...

I'm taking the camera again just in case some other special guests show up like last time.

Hope to see some of you there.

Jim

THAT was it! Thanx, Jim.

I won't be there myself tonight. Had to get back home and start squeezing 2 weeks of production prep into 2 days, now that the Go-Go's have taken up the small window I had.

I went down to Sam's again Monday night and had another wonderful time. The web site said the show started at 10:00 pm, but it actually started at 9:30. Since I showed up just after 9:30 I missed the first song. When I arrived, the band was in the middle of Lovin' Cup. Next came Freedom, Help the Poor and Cannonball Shuffle. From then on was mostly jams and a couple of them I'm starting to recognize.

The band tonight was Robben, Jeff Babko, Mike Landau, Jonathan Drussel (sp?) on drums and Andrew Ford on bass. Don't know where Gary and Jimmy were during the first set. However, Gary showed up between sets and played the first tune of that set. After that it was time for musical chairs again and Chris Chainy sat in on bass and another guitarist stood in for Mike. I want to say his name was Nick Lashley, but I'm not sure.

The most noticeable difference was that Mike finally found the volume knob on his amp and I'm really glad he did. I've heard people talk about him a lot and I've heard him now myself just a little at Sam's but this time I could really hear him and he was playing some great stuff. I'm going to go back next Monday when he's fronting the band because RF will be out of town and I'm really looking forward to hearing more from him.

Tuesday mornings are just killing me but its worth every minute. I'm very fortunate to be so close to this great venue where these guys are playing. I'm in heaven!

You're right Kevin. But sadly, they didn't come out well because the stage lights were much lower than usual and I don't want to use a flash because Robben hates flash photography when he's trying to play. I'll try again though and hopefully it will turn out better next time.

Sure, Kevin. If I go, I'll take a couple of pics. Check out the pics I took the first night because I have a couple of Mike's setup there. I didn't get all of the pedals, but you can see some of them. And he's had the same amp and strat every night since then.

I cannot find where it was originally mentioned (and pictured?) that the only pedals Robben is using are volume, wah, and Zendrive. Sorry for the amateurish question, but in what order are they from guitar to amp?

Hi JZ, look at Alf's pics from the Tampa Bay Blues Festival on Daved's page. There's a good picture of the pedals. I think Daved runs a purple cable into the Dumble, and if so, the order of the pedals is Zendrive, Wah, and Volume. The picture I've got on my desktop of Robben's rig from the Greg Allman shows has a purple cable going into the Dumble's input. I'm betting Daved uses that cable on purpose and it always goes to the amp.
