Way back when, my high school band teacher turned us on to Billy Cobham's "Spectrum" album:

It was the first I'd heard or heard of Tommy Bolin.

To a lot of players, Spectrum was the first intro into "jazz" way back when. It was accessible to those of us brought up on the pentatonic approach because Bolin was basically a rocker thrown into a jazz rock session with Cobham and Jan Hammer. The compositions might have had a more complex structure than a 12 bar blues, but Bolin really brought them back to earth, so to speak. Totally the opposite of what Cobham was doing with Mahavishnu around the same time. Very fun album to play along with - and Red Baron and Stratus are two tunes that show up at jams all the time. Bolin was pretty hot for the time- shame he had to die so young.

Side note-I always enjy the bass playing on this - Lee Sklar - who is more known for working with James Taylor and those type of artists, but he lays down a great groove.

Amazing LP. I think it got me into jazz rock. Bolin is outstanding there, but I never heard anything similar from him later on.

"Red Baron" is probably my favourite...maybe because I heard "Spectrum" several thousand times...

A notable player on this date is Joe Farrell.

He was on Chick Corea's RTF album "Light as a Feather" around the same time, and absolutely tore it up on tenor sax and flute.

He also made a fine album with George Benson called "Benson & Farrell"

(the album cover features a cigarette-pack motif, a la "Benson & Hedges.")
