I saw John Scofield on Thursday night (4/13) at Yoshi's .....His band is amazing as well.

I would love to see Robben and Scofield perform together and was wondering if they have. Does anyone know if they have ever collaborated live or recorded?

Cool Bob Dylan?? He's not going to do that newfangled "electric" stuff is he?

And be sure to let everyone know if it's Merle Haggard. 33 years ago (can't believe it was that long ago) I took a friend to hear George Jones at an auditorium in Portland, Oregon. A few minutes after the show was to start, the MC came out and told us Jones was "ill" (the bottle, perhaps?), but that one of his "friends" had been contacted and was going to come in about an hour to entertain us. Folks who wanted refunds could go back out to the ticket office and get all their money back in the meantime. About two thirds of the house left. Then about an hour later George's "friend" showed up. It was Merle Haggard. I still remember it as one of the most amazing concerts I've ever attended.

BlueRunner, I'm impressed you remembered a concert that happened 33 ago! Razz If I don't write about, I don't remember anything about it next week...

About 3000 fans showed up for this double billing -- Merle Haggard and Bob Dylan -- at the USF Sundome. I sat next to a 3 year old girl -- It was her third Bob Dylan concert ! She had her ear plugs, and sippy cup, and she was taking it all in !

Merle played first. I'm not much of a country fan, but Merle Haggar and his 10-piece band (The Strangers) were enjoyable. They played a little Blues, a little Country/Western, and a little "vanilla ice cream" music . They played a killer version of Robert Johnson's Milkcow's Calf Blues, which included a great fiddle solo. Merle's band also sounded great on Johnny Cash' Folsom Prison Blues and Haggard's original Workin' Man Blues.

Bob Dylan had a tight 6-piece band, including a very good pedal steel guitar player. Dressed in a dark suit and a flat-brimmed, white hat, Bob Dylan played it cool behind the keyboards (no guitar). On several songs, he played a small hand-held harp with one hand while still playing keyboards with the other. Dylan's vocals sounded good, considering the Sundome usually sounds like the inside of an oil can. The set list was really good! There were two songs I didn't recognize, but here's the rest of the set list:

Maggie's Farm
She Belongs to Me
Tweedle Dee & Tweedle Dum
Lay, Lady, Lay
Love Sick
I'll be your Baby Tonight
Ballad of a Thin Man
Cold Irons Bound
Girl from the North Country
Summer Days
Like a Rolling Stone
All Along the Watchtower

Cold Irons Bound was one of the best songs of the night and it was performed different than any of the Dylan recordings I have heard. A chilling intro featuring keyboard & sacred steel led into the pulsing beat of the song. Dylan turned it into a jam, taking a long keyboard solo before giving a solo to one of the guitar players. It was the only extended improvisation all night, but it was awesome! Girl from North Country was another highlight of the show. It was performed with acoustic guitar accompaniment. It's a beautiful song and the band played it just perfect.

Saw and heard Scott Henderson 3 weeks ago. They did a mind blowing version of Meter Maid (from Tore Down House), swore to myself to never play this tune again, not even mention it anymore...

Short cables are presumed to preserve the best from a cranked amp.
No loss. Some say that's why B.B sits always next to his amp. 'Coz it's a short cable. Go figure , strange voodoo happening.

I'm looking forward to seeing Todd Rundgren as frontman for The New Cars this week. Blondie is also on the double bill.

I can't believe it's been almost 30 years since my first Cars concert. I haven't played my New Wave records in years !

The Blues is "on hold" this week ! Laughing

Seen Brian Auger and his Oblivion Express recently. What a HAMMOND sound!!! His son Karma is a fantastic drummer and his daughter a good singer. Must be nice to play with your kids.

I checked out The New Cars cd today on xxx.com, and the reviews sound pretty good. I was only a mild Cars fan back in the day, but the reviews for this new cd, especially with Todd Rundgren fronting, sounds really good! And, at its initial release sales price (under 10 bucks), it's worth a shot.

Looking forward to another one of your intense reviews, RW! Have fun at the show!

The show was cancelled Sad

The guitarist, Elliott Easton, fell and broke his clavicle when the tour bus swerved to avoid a crash. He had to have surgery. So The New Cars tour is "on hold" until he recovers.

Amazing Things Art Center.... what a cool name for a music venue Exclamation

I read that Eric Bibb has released a new cd, "12 Gates to the City." It's a collection of spirituals. I haven't heard the CD yet, but he performed some of the songs when I saw him in St. Louis with the Rockin' Blues Revue -- and he was fabulous! I'm planning to see him play again in a few weeks at the Amazing Things Art Center !

Van Morrison, Masonic, 3-3-06. Killer show, and I can't remember when I saw the Man play so much guitar and sax.
