Sad new today in music. Billy Preston died at the too young age of 59. Was well known for his ties with The Beatles, and was often referred to as "the 5th Beatle". I saw him live in the mid-70s with McCartney during the Band On The Run tour...

Very good USAToday article http://www.usatoday.com/life/people/2006-06-06-billy-preston-obit_x.htm. I didn't realize his involvement with the Rolling Stones until I read it...

RIP Billy! Anyone who's mastered that wonderful sound of a Hammond B3 is tops in my book. Cool

JohnnyZ, I saw Billy in Sacramento aroud three years ago with Eric Clapton. Eric was dead that night, the worst show I've been to. He seemed like all he wanted to do was get out of town, and then Billy took over. He jumped over his B3 took to the stage and wow, Eric backed up to his amp and let Billy go. What a show he did only two songs but stole the show. I think Eric was even blown away. Sad, sad, sad, way to young. he will be missed.

Richard

This is indeed a shame - he was the only Beatle I liked. What a great sideman, he contributed so much to so many.

I have an old import LP I bought years ago - BP live with Mick Taylor. recorded live when Billy was working with the Stones in 73 (I think). Taylor would sit in with Billy's band when they opened for the Stones - some great funk and Taylor just lets it rip. A great LP - wonder if it is available on cd these days?
