What a great video! And, Bob Berg, as well............one of the all-time great sax players.........now, sadly, deceased. Thanks for sharing the video. |

I just found this video last night and think it's really great. One thing, however, is Robben's sound. At the time when Robben was playing with Miles he was using late model Strats. I also don't think he was using his Dumble either (although I'm not sure). Although his playing is wonderful, the Strats don't have the power and the punch to do his playing justice. I would have loved to have seen him with his Fender RF/Dumble rig at this time! |

Did you notice Robben switched guitars during the sax solo? Presumably a technical problem.
Real hard to judge sound quality given the bandwidth and source limitations, but it sounded to me like that first guitar was coming through more clearly than the 2nd guitar, which he was playing during the solo.
Very cool clip in any case! |

I would've never recognized Robben with the shorter hair...
Also, notice how high he wears his guitar! |

After seeing this soundclip of Robben with Miles I too was surprised by the poor quality of his guitarsound during the solo.
I can assure you that at the concert with Miles at the North Sea Jazz Festival that I witnessed,he was using the Dumble and also at the Festival in Montreux a few days later, of which I have a sort of illegal videotape,he was clearly using the Dumble amp.
He had one killer guitarsound on both occasions, but as ar as I can remember he was using the other Strat, that you see in the beginning of the Santana-Miles video.

In the second half, Robben's using one of those Strat Elite things with the push buttons and horrid vibrato. I thought I saw something that might have been the Dumble back there, but there is also a Marshall that someone is using.
Interesting, the video guys probably thought it was a big deal to have Carlos there, but you can see he's faking his way though a lot of it. While Robben's jumping around, having a great time, and fully in command of what he's doing. Then Carlos starts extending his fours, stepping on Robben. Until the end when Robben pulls out one of his patented half dimished licks, and Carlos just grins like the schoolboy he is in that situation. _________________ There are no such things as wrong notes, there's only the look on your face.

Agreed. I kept thinking "Carlos, shut up for a minute, will ya?" It's called "trading fours", not "trading my sixteens for every one of your fours".
I enjoyed some of Carlos' playing, and didn't expect him to be as familiar with the tune as the rest of the band. But steppin all over Robben--that wasn't cool. |

I'm sorry, FatTeleTom, but with your comment, you meant that Carlos Santana wasn't familiarized as much as Robben was, with the material?
Or...he just wasn't up to it?
Maybe that was not his thing, right?
I don't know if it was just me or Santana played a little bit "safe" there...not as adventurous and/or edgy as Robben. |

Watched it, didn't notice the guitar change, didn't notice Carlos walking over Robben, watched it again saw all that. I just thought how much fun that would have been. They all looked like it was a blast. Thats what its all about to me!

I didn't notice any of those things either. Then again, I'm usually oblivious to those kinds of details and otherwise absorbed in the music, the musicians, and the atmosphere. Heck, I can't tell the difference between a real vs. a computer-generated image in a movie, such as The Matrix, unless it's obvious! |

Santana also stepped all over Bob Berg's solo at the onset of it.
I did hear Santana play off of Trey very well on a board tape one time |
