The tone on Rush Hour and Imperial strut does not sound like the dumble tone

Was he using the Boogie Mark 1 on those solos? THis was from 1981 to 1983

Oh, and what axe(s)??

Amps: Yamaha G100-2-12s with the black and silver knobs and refitted with new baffles for 1-12" EV speakers, and the guitar for those particular tunes was a 335 but a strat was used on a few tunes also.

Red is correct, as he always is! Those tunes were recorded in 1979. I saw those guys in 1978, and Robben was playing a Boogie. Through the early 80's he was doing clinics with the Yamahas.

Mike, you know more about Robben than anyone I know. I know about the amps at that time because I went to a clinic in San Jose where he was really specific about what he had done to those amps and he was playing them at the clinic. (Remember the clinic at "The Smokey Mountain" in Campbell)? Stay cool, bud.

The sound reminds me more of the Yamaha's. I played one several years ago and Red picked up one recently that also sounds similar (I think I may have played my 335 though it). One of the better SS distortion tones. At the time, Yamaha made some of the better SS hi-fi equipment coming out of Japan and I think they got engineers and musicians together who talked to each other. The Roland JC is more famous, but I think these are some of the most useful SS amps around.
Stern was still using his the last time I saw him.
