Steely Dan and Michael McDonald played here in Las Vegas Saturday night. They played the Aladdin Theater a 7000 seater, I have seen literally 200 shows there. I saw my very first rock concert there Alice Cooper w/ the Babies.
Michael McDonald started the show with his 7 ( I think ) piece band. M.M. on piano/vocal. A Sax and a good guitar player, they interacted a lot together very well. A Hammond B3 player, a groovy woman drummer. M.M. impressed me so much, so much soul, with great songs. A nice mix of Doobie Brothers, solo work and Motown stuff.
Set list: I don’t know all the names but this will hopefully give enough to ID the song.
1. It Keeps you runnin ( long intro )
2. Shine the light on me ( great hook you may remember this song from a Billy Crystal movie. In the video was the late great Gregory Hinds, very nice Sax and Guitar exchange).
3. Keep Forgetting ( I forgot how much I like this song )
4. Stop Look and Listen ( Motown, great back vocal groove )
5. That’s the way god planed it ( tribute to the late great Billy Preston also known as the 5th … well you know )
6. Ain’t no love to be found
7. Grape vine
8. second that emotion
9. you belong to me
10. Minute by minute (outstanding)
11. what a fool believes
12. Ain’t no mountain high enough/nothing like the real thing
13. taking it to the streets
Steely Dan: As always, great songs played just right, Fagan still has that great voice and that Ray Charles look:
Set list :
1. Bodhisattva
2. chase the dragon
3. aja
4. ?
5. hey Nineteen
6. ?
7. Do it again
8. Black Friday
9. Dirty work ( back ground singer vocal too gospel for my taste, too many vocal runs, I like the studio version but don’t know who sang it?)
10. Show biz kid ( with this “low spark of high heeled boys” sounding intro and M.M. Vocal, just great!! )
11. ?
12. Peg
13. Don’t take me alive
14. my old school
15. F.M.
I may have missed one or two more songs….W.B. still play’s too much they should have Jon Herington do most of the solos.
What more can I say, it was worth $125 and I will spend the $19.00 when the DVD comes out ( I hope I hope )….

I'm hoping to see them when they come to Detroit in September. How'd Jon Herington sound on guitar--he's a great player and a really good guy. |

Jon is great, pulls off all the Carltin +++ players that recorded with Steely Dan.
Two very important songs that I forgot to mention:
"Josie"
"Kid Charlemagne"

I missed the show here in LA but a buddy of mine made it and said WB kept asking all night long if Owen Wilson was in the house. This is why...

That is heavy man, maybe that actor didn’t know about all this, he did not write the script. I think WB did say something about Owen Wilson being in the audience, after a 4 or 5 minute long winded introduction for all the players.
Wow a big time Hollywood feud…..Yaawwhhhnnnnn…..
Thanks

Owen Wilson Says 'Dupree' Is No Rip-Off
By Associated Press
12:06 PM PDT, July 28, 2006
LOS ANGELES -- Owen Wilson has denied any connection between his new movie, "You, Me and Dupree," and '70s supergroup
Steely Dan, a spokesman for the actor said Friday.
The band recently posted a letter on their Web site claiming that Wilson's Dupree character was based on their
Grammy-winning song, "Cousin Dupree," about a couch-hopping houseguest.
In a statement released by his spokeswoman, Ina Treciokas, Wilson said: "I have never heard the song `Cousin Dupree' and I
don't even know who this gentleman, Mr. Steely Dan, is. I hope this helps to clear things up and I can get back to
concentrating on my new movie, `HEY 19.'"
Larry Solters, a spokesman for the band's management company, did not immediately return a call for comment.
Steely Dan released a string of hits in the '70s, including "Hey Nineteen," "Reeling in the Years" and "Rikki Don't Lose
That Number."
"There are some pretty heavy people who are upset about this whole thing and we can't guarantee what kind of heat little
Owen may be bringing down on himself," band leaders Walter Becker and Donald Fagen wrote in the letter.
The band asked Wilson, 37, to appear at a concert to apologize to their fans.
"You, Me and Dupree" co-stars Kate Hudson and Matt Dillon as a newlywed couple annoyed by Dupree, a friend who crashes on
their couch.
In 2001, "Cousin Dupree" won a Grammy for best pop performance by a duo or group from Steely Dan's album "Two Against
Nature," which snagged album of the year. _________________ "Somebody's got to make some music around here." - Robben Ford |

Unless Wilson wrote the screenplay and originated this character, I don't see why Steely Dan is going after him - why not the writers and producers. Or is this not as much fun as going after an actor? Does seem kind of silly in a Hollywood kind of way. |

Steely Dan & Michael McDonald played Tampa Amphitheatre last night.
I don't like this venue, but it was a nice evening -- clear skys and a big moon -- and lawn tickets went on sale yesterday for only $22.50... I'm glad I went!
Donald Fagen was full of engery and beautiful spunk. He drinks too much Coca Cola ... but he puts on a great show.
Jon Herington was amazing! The big-screen camera guy zoomed in on him all night. Jon's playing sounded great and it looked even better! He makes it look so easy.
The band played many of the same songs as the show Rainmkr63 saw, adding Time out of Mind, I got the News, Green Earrings and Deacon Blues. I couldn't stay till the end, but I heard that McDonald sang a few songs with Steely Dan after I left.
Michael McDonald opened the show with a 90 minute set. His set list was identical to Rainmkr's show, except on Ain't Nothing Like the Real Thing, McDonald was joined by Tampa's Without Walls Church Choir. They sounded really great ! _________________ Travelling by train of thought |

Jeeezzzz $22.50 that is a bargain.
Sounds like you had a great time, outside shows can be euphoric. “Deacon Blues” love that song. I became a fan of M.M. after that show, Jon H. is great too.
Must have been a blast!
