After the Coach House show the other night, Robben road in the equipment van with me to the hotel up in Burbank and again the next day during the 5 hour drive up to Mammoth Lakes.

During the trip he asked me about a song he'd heard & enjoyed recently on the radio. I quickly deduced that it was "Bloody Well Right" by Supertramp, so I played the "Crime Of The Century" album in it's entirety for him off my i-Pod. He enjoyed it very much, commenting at one point that songwriting of that caliber just doesn't seem to be something bands are doing much of these days, and says he wants to pick up his own copy. I encouraged him to also get the "Crises? What Crises?" album at the same time.

At one point, while discussing the show of the previous night I asked him about his comments about an upcoming recording of "Talk To Your Daughter". He told me that (and this should make Blob quite happy) he and Larry Carlton are planning on doing an acoustic show together at the New Morning in Paris later this year and recording it. He says they plan on doing a slow version of TTYD during this set.

He also mentioned to me that John Mayall is planning on releasing a Freddy King tribute CD and likes Robben's "Cannonball Shuffle", so John recently recorded a studio version of it, with Robben sitting in. Robben and I have no idea when, or even if, the CD will actually get released, but you RF completists might want to watch future Mayall releases for this cut.

Interesting tidbits, Daved, thanks!

Re: Supertramp. They're one of my alltime favorites. I agree that Crime... and Crisis... are 2 of their best. Even In The Quietest Moments and Breakfast in America also deserve mention. I especially like the songs Sister Moonshine, School, and Goodbye Stranger for their catchy guitar riffs and melodies. Great live shows too!

That new morning club in Paris seems like it gets a great crowd, I have and love the new Mike Stern DVD from there. Very interesting about Super Tramp, music like this may still be made but it sure doesn’t make it to the main stream like it used to. It seems if music has some imagination behind it the record companies stay clear. It does not fit with there intent to dumb down peoples listening ability. I have a great home made compilation disk with “School” and “take the long way home” those are two great Super Tramp songs from my younger days.

3 cheers for Robben Ford, fighting to make interesting progressive highly listenable music, he is performing better then ever.

Great updates Daved.

Take care
Rob

Exactly what I told Robben... almost verbatim! Wink
Saw them a couple of times, first being at the L.A. Forum during the "Crises" tour, when my girlfriend at the time bought tickets for my birthday as she knew I was really into them.

Robben asked me at one point, "Dave, do you sense or think that they actually played and recorded all their own parts?" I assured him that I did as when I saw them live they flawlessly performed all parts themselves. That's when he got into the stuff about this kind of musicianship and songwriting becoming a lost art.

I might add that in addition to some great songs and execution, Crime of the Century could always be found in any respectable 'audiophile' stereo shop to demo their good stuff. It was so well recorded/engineered that even the off the shelve copies sounded great on a good stereo. And if you got a copy of a Mobile Sound Lab or Japanese import, watch out! I certainly remember cranking up the volume when trying to show off my gear.
Certainly a great piece of work!

I saw a cool tour about 8 years ago, it was called Solotramp an evening with Roger Hodgson. He was all by himself switching between Guitar Keys and a great pipe organ that he said was in his family for a long time, in his grandmother’s basement.

He is the high voice dude “the logical song” etc..for those that didn’t know…

I never got bored just watching and listening to him it was dynamite.

Daved,

Thanks for all your behind the scenes trivia and tidbits. I really love hearing about the conversations and thoughts like in this post. It reminds me of listening to Robben talk at one of his clinics in Ojai. I wanted to learn how he thinks about music, what inspires him, and his overall approach to playing music. Granted, the technical gear stuff is great too and I can try to cop licks from the recordings. But this kind of info is priceless. Many thanks for taking the time to even shed some light on this side your relationship with Robben.

On a side note, are you going to be with Robben at the San Diego gig w/Larry on Oct. 12. Would love to shake your hand.

Thanks, David

A live recording of Larry + Robben is wonderful news. Robben has recorded a acoustic album before...I want a "Last Nite w Robben Ford" type of album if you know what I mean.

I'm curious if the photo on the New Morning Paris DVD (inside sleeve) was taken the night of the show ? Looks like Clint Eastwood in the crowd Razz

I like this DVD very much. Was this concert recorded over one or two nights?

I guess your talking about RF at 'The new morning' not Mike Stern.

I see the clint E. looking dude under the names of the players from RFs sleeve. I don't think it is him though I am sure he would have liked the show.

I re-watched both DVD's last night, fab!!
