As much as I love Robben.... Badge is not one of Robben's strongest tracks! Clapton's version is legendary! It's Clapton at his artistic peak! I don't know how anyone could ever do it better!
However, that said, I don't think Clapton could come close to outdoing Robben on any of his tunes either...
Robben is such a great writer! Why do any covers anymore? _________________ www.hendersounds.com

Hi! I voted yesterday (in favor of Robben's version of course).
I just wanted to say that my band and I are gonna start working
on it for our repertoire. Also, I wanted to tell you that I found another
version of "Badge" among my CD collection on Jeff Healey's "Cover to Cover"! I still like Robben's version better. It has such a "San Francisco" sound to it. It sounds like a mixture of Santana and even Boston - and I love the backing vocals!
Ciao!

Hi Suzie,
Can you tell us more about your band? Do you have any Robben songs in your repertoir?

Hey Leftbender! Thanks for the interest!
We are just starting a new band and plan to do rock/blues (our old band used to do 70's rock), so I spent my weekend looking for ideas. We might decide to do just Robben Ford covers (and covers of his covers). But I listened to some John Mayall and even Fabulous Thunderbirds, Stevie Ray Vaughan and/or Jeff Healey maybe, but there are many others... it's hard to decide.. I guess we'll settle for the easiest things in the end. We're just amateurs...
Ciao!

Hi Suzie, so you're a drummer ? We should manage to meet next time Robben's band plays italy or south france in order to jam
along with me (gtr) Marin (gtr) Arbeen (bass) you (drums) and why not any others
we love to play Robben's tunes like Step on it, Brother, Prison of love, Start it up, Freedom and cover Robben's covers too. But my first shock
was Jimi hendrix and still is ( talkin' about the 70's).

I posted my comments on the new cd yesterday, but something I heard tihs morning is relevant to why I am not crazy about RFs version of Badge - so I'll add it here. David Byrne was on Morning Edition (NPR) talking about the Talking Heads (box set released today). He said that their cover of Al Green's Take me to the River was successful because it was "so off the mark." He knew he could not sing like Al Green, nor could the band play like Al Green's band, so the result was something very different and unique. On Badge, RF did not go for the special or unique enough to make it "off the mark" in my mind. What we have is a good version played by a solid band. And I still think most of the problem is with the drums - sounds like a "blues" band trying to cover a "rock" song. I don't know if any of the players out there have had to suffer through mediocre country and western dance hall bands playing the obligatory "rock" songs (Tush, Freebird, BTO, Bad Company, etc) but they always come off lame, usually because the drummer is used to playing two-steps and polkas. This is kind of how I feel when I listen to Badge. Not to be too analytical or anything! |
