Loaded the iPod Shuffle up to play through the P.A. at an lunch meeting with a Hawaiian theme. (We all wore luau shirts.) So my drive time has featured stuff such as the Beach Boys' "Hawaii," the Ventures' "Theme From Hawaii Five-O," some IZ, some Keola Beamer, some vintage stuff, AND:
Three versions of "Aloha 'Oe":
Elvis (from the "Blue Hawaii soundtrack);
Marty Robbins; and
Les Paul.
Now how cool is that? _________________ - BlueRunner |

Last night's 4 hour, 5-disc drive from New York included:
Fleetwood Mac (self-titled, 1975) and Rumours; Cry of Love- Brother; Dream Theater playing the entire Dark Side of the Moon live; and, a Best of George Harrison.
Was by myself, so I had the luxury of having my Jetta's awesome Monsoon stereo on maximum tolerable volume. I decided to give Fleetwood Mac a try after a couple of decades of only hearing their classic hits from these 2 albums on the radio. Pleasantly surprised at how good these albums sounded, and now that I "hear" guitar more, I really appreciated Lindsey Buckingham's "sound", or should I say, sounds. It's refreshing to hear a guitarist change it up from bright and airy to mellow and low trebley to down and dirty. Love Christine McVie's voice too.
Cry of Love. They're a pretty obscure band, only 2 albums. This album, Brother, was one of those recommendations from I forget who years ago, but I tried it and it's a keeper. Sounds like Bad Co. meets Hendrix/Trower.
Someone recently gave me the Dream Theater live rendition of Pink Floyd's DSOTM. Obviously a boot, but the sound quality is great. Even better is the music. I love DSOTM, but it's nice to hear another band perform it (well).
The last disc on the ride was the George Harrison Best of. A great way to mellow down the last leg of the trip with While My Guitar Gently Weeps and My Sweet Lord... |

Bob Dylan ~ Modern Times
It's a great cd! Mostly Blues. His band on this recording is excellent! For a few dollars extra, get the Limited Edition release, which includes a bonus DVD. _________________ Travelling by train of thought |

Twinkle Schascle's "Gemini I & II".
Anyone heard Twinkle? She toured with Dickey Betts this summer.
Man, can she belt out "Stormy Monday"! |

I've seen Schascle several times around the Tampa Bay area. She's got a great voice and she plays piano too.
Last January, she opened for Aerosmith at the St. Pete Times Forum (in place of Lenny Kravitz, who got sick). I didn't know she had a new album. I've got "Haunted by Real Life (1990).
In my car, I've been listening to Mofro (Lochloosa) and Gabe Ford (self titled) -- both cds have a similar groove. _________________ Travelling by train of thought |

Hey Road Warrior,
I don't know how knew of a CD "Gemini" is. What it is is a 2 CD compilation of her representative work over the years. |

Michel Camilo and Tomatito : "Spain Again".
Amazing album, they play a few beautiful Astor Piazzolla pieces. |

Jake Shimakuburo must have one heck of a press agent. Heard him on NPR's "Weekend Edition," then later on NPR's "Morning Edition," then bought two of his albums via iTunes. So plenty of 'ukulele coming out of my car's sound system these day. _________________ - BlueRunner |

Essential Robin Trower.
Bought this in preparation for a Robin Trower show in a couple of weeks at the Berkeley Performance Center. Never owned any RT music, but always loved hearing the Bridge of Sighs album that my roommates at the time always played. The combination of never having seen RT and the show being at Berkeley on a Sunday afternoon for little dough prompted me to go. Oh, and the cd, Essential Robin Trower- a lot of really good tracks which have psyched me out on going even more!
BTW, some pretty good videos of RT on youtube. |
