|
|
Don't know if anyone is getting as much eBay spam and phishing stuff as I am these days. It's pretty amazing. It takes the form of clever imitations of genuine messages from or via eBay, with the title "Message from eBay Member," and includes a purported message from a purported eBay seller to the effect of, "Hey, I haven't received your payment on the ____________ for which you were the winning bidder. If you don't log in and give the requested information right now, I'm going to report you to eBay, and they're going to shut down your account." I haven't clicked on any of the links, but I assume they'll take me to another site that looks official, and has boxes for me to fill in my birthdate, social security number, name of the dog I had when I was a kid, favorite cereal, home address, bank account outgoing wire transfer number, credit card numbers, and secret location of my 1950's Mickey Mantle baseball cards. What the spammers probably don't think about, however, is:
1. They're sending these messages to my office e-mail address, which I most definitely do NOT use for my actual eBay account (and eBay itself has no idea what it is); and,
2. The thing I've supposed to have purchased is always something really stupid, like a plasma TV, or some jewelry, or something like that. If these phishers were really serious, they'd tell me I was the winning bidder on something I really WANT. Say, for instance, a vintage Tele'.
Anyway, 99.9% of the phishes I get are purportedly from banks or other institutions with which I've never done business, so I generally erase them without even opening them, but still, I trust that there's a special place in hell for these people.
Well, gotta' get back to my e-mail. I see someone just sent me a special offer to get a low-interest re-fi mortgage so I can buy an genuine "Rol5ex" to wear after I've ingested some of the "V#iagr7a" they got a deal on in Canada and want to ship to me in an unmarked package. It's go great to be popular! _________________ - BlueRunner |

No Ebay spam here at the moment (though I had some at one point), but all the Viagra, fake diplomas, Rolex copies, penis enlargment messages have never been that present, there has been a noticeable increase lately.
And I was fooling myself by thinking that all my little problems were private |

I get a lot of spam like that too but I take consolation in the fact that 'married women in my area want to sleep with me'!! Never realised I was held in such high regard in my area.

Of course, I never open the spam -- just delete it when I see the subject header. But I keep wondering if "She'll Thank You For It" is a message telling me how much she'd like it if I (a) came home from work when I said I was, (b) did the dishes once in a while, (c) picked up my socks, and (d) turned the amp down a bit after 10 o'clock.
Ron S: Re the married women in your neighborhood who want you: You gotta' delete that photo of yourself on your web site, the one with the Spandex bicycle shorts and open-chested silk shirt. Then maybe you'll get some peace around the house.
Also, lately I've been getting e-mails that don't have real words or letters in the headers. Just little boxes. Now why would anyone think that I'd want to buy a lot of little boxes over the internet? (Do you think it's the ghost of Malvina Reynolds trying to contact me?) _________________ - BlueRunner |

Speaking of spam, I just found this:
The newest registered user is 81lu9k5vblskz
"Its" profile has a link to a "buy levitra online" website.
I know there's a bunch of us old codgers here, including me, but can't they leave us alone? |

Perhaps they have suggestions on how we could improve on our "tone" _________________ "Creativeness often consists of merely turning up what is already there. Did you know that right and left shoes were only thought up a little more than a century ago?" - Bernice Fitz-Gibbon 1894-1982 |
