I never knew that Robben appeared on the many Pink Floyd tribute albums. I've always been a huge PF fan. Anyone have any or all of these? Can you post the songs he plays and the particular album?

Thanks for this Johnny! I've seen it or one like it in the past and have used it when my jones for more RF tunes becomes unbearable.
I also find his involvement on the Pink Floyd tributes to be interesting, but don't have any.
One cd from this list that surprised me is the Georgie Fame 'Cool Cat Blues' cd. It's a good listen. I only knew him from the 'I Say Yea Yea' song from the old days. Robben plays throughout this cd of jazzy blues. Turns out Fame also appears with Van Morrison on some of his cds.
So, looks like I'll be scouring Amazon for some of these, since you've re-lit the fire. I'm curious about the Boz Scaggs and Jesse Colin Young cds.

Robben's been a busy boy!

This is a pretty impressive list. The problem is, trying to find the "good stuff" can be a problem. For example, yes, RF is on Little Feat's Down on the Farm. He plays acoustic on one track. So if you are looking for typical RF picking, you will not find it. And you may have spent 15 bucks. (OK - you should own this anyway because Little Feat are great, even if this one is not one of their best - and Lowell George used a Dumble, so there!).

Here are a couple that I know about that for sure have the "good stuff" RF puts out, and are worth the money:

Bob Malach Searcher Producer, ?, Guitar

Jimmy Witherspoon Live at the Mint Producer, Liner Notes, Guitar

Jimmy Witherspoon Live at the Notodden Festival Main Performer, Performer, Guitar - Both of these CDs with Spoon are toward the end of his life/career, and his voice is not what it used to be. Still good stuff.

Bob Malach Mood Swing Arranger, Guitar

L.A. Express L.A. Express Guitar - no Tom Scott on this one, but still good LA funk/fusion.

Jimmy Witherspoon Live: Jimmy Witherspoon & Robben Ford Vocals, Main Performer, Performer, Guitar - this is the real deal - RF playing the blues and Spoon singing great. This is the band I saw the first time I saw RF. Never forget it.

Jimmy Witherspoon Spoonful Guitar - studio LP with some good RF playing, but a lot of the tunes are over produced funkified crap that was "popular" in the late 1970's.

Charlie Musselwhite Takin' My Time Vocals, Guitar

Tom Scott Tom Cat Guitar (Electric), Guitar (Acoustic), Guitar - some of his best early work IMHO. The LA Express was a group of monster LA session players. John Guerin on drums - damn! Some guy named Carlton held down the guitar spot before RF.

These are just a few - I am sure other folks can add more.

Van Morrison and Georgie Fame - check out How Long Has This Been Goin' On? - a live set that just swings hard. Great version of All Saints Day.

I think that its probably the same tribute cd (Pigs and Pyramids) but it appears more than once in the database. Robben does one track ("Breathe"). Quite an amazing solo.

Kiss - "Creatures of the Night"- 1982
Tracks - "I Still Love You" and "Rock and Roll Hell". I have a tape of a GIT clinic where he talks about the session and apparently was asked to join the band. (Ace was having problems around that time, I guess).

That has to be one of those "what if" events that would have changed the entire course of human history...

Haha! And, what if Robben was a rap "artist"? We'd be talking about the best microphone to achieve Robben rap tone, and vintage Dumble turntables. And, Elizabeth would be reporting on the bling... Laughing

you may be right about that BUT, I seem to recall an excellent solo (ele. guitar) on a cut from Down On The Farm called "Wake Up Dreaming". It may not show it in the credits but to me there is only one guy that sounds like that Wink (give it a listen and tell me it is not RF Smile )
Your other comments are right on IMHO

Hi Phil:

Could be... if I could find my copy of the CD I would check it out! Fred Tackett was also a guest in that release, as I recall. Anyone else out there have a copy of Down on the Farm they can take a listen to?

Not to put too fine a point on it, but Robben in fact lays down a killer electric solo on one of the tunes from that album. I bought it when it was first released, because I loved the Feat, and recognized the solo instantly as Robben - what a great surprise. I could spot him a mile away, even back then....

Great list, BTW.

Cool - I stand corrected (would not be the first time, nor the last). Now if I could only find my copy... thanks, Mike!

Interesting how he gets listed on some as "Arranger" or some such. While Live in Breminale has his version of Take Out Some Insurance, that's John all over that live date. Robben was back home doing something else. They even had to get Stan Poplin out of retirement to fly in from Norway at the last minute. Never heard of "Power of Seven". Anybody know what they play? And a listing for writing the liner notes on Volker's album? Does that count as "appearing on"?.

The Bonnie Raitt is a song called "Free Ride" and sounds phoned in. There is a special thanks given in the liner notes and I'm sure the mutual respect runs deep, but it's not one of Robben's killer moments. Jorgensen is amazing on that album though. Textbook case in session work.

One album not listed where he guests and plays great is Garth Webber's Man On a Mission. A long awaited chance to hear them trade fours.

I heard that he played a few years ago with Phil Lesh and Friends (from the Grateful Dead). I would love to be able to hear some of that.

Robben also plays a tune on Ricky Peterson's album Nightwatch. The whole album is really, really good, but Robben's performance on the tune Put Your Faith in Me is outstanding and makes the album worth owning by itself.
