Liquid Tension Experiment and Liquid Tension Experiment 2.

LTE is a "side project" band featuring Mike Portnoy and John Petrucci from Dream Theater, Jordan Rudess before joining Dream Theater, and Tony Levin. What's especially amazing is the totally unrehearsed 28-minute jam on the first cd. If you're a DT fan and/or into progressive type music, you'll certainly enjoy LTE.

If I'm not mistaken, I believe the RoadWarrior has mentioned this artist: Anthony Gomes. I heard a clip or two from his latest album and was impressed enough to give it a try, and no regrets at all. Music Is The Medicine is a great funky groovy album, and Anthony Gomes is a heck of an ax slinger. Pretty good on the vocals too. Got the cd yesterday, and it's on its 3rd rerun...

The other day I loaded nothing but Jake Shimabukuro into my iTunes Shuffle (four albums worth). What can I say? It was a ukulele-type day. Back to the blues, tho'. Yesterday the latest Blues Revue arrived, with sampler CD. The first cut is Ike Turner's new recording of "Gimme Back My Wig," and it gets better from there.

I, too, just picked up the Beatles "Love" CD, tho I haven't yet had the chance to listen to it. It's emminent release was all over the British news while we were there featuring interviews with Sir George Martin about his involvement.
I, myself, have wondered for sometime when someone was going to get around to digitally remastering the Beatles catalogue from the original tapes and felt that when it was done that it should be Martin who did the remixes.
I'm glad he's finally done it, even tho it is only for the one CD and the few songs selected for that CD.
It's pretty much felt, as stated by Mr. Martin himself, that this would most likely be his last significant involvement with a Beatles project.
I'm eager to hear how it turned out.

I am having a lot of fun with this “Love” disk, the sound is outstanding! This was created for a big Vegas show and it morphs a bunch of Beatles songs and sounds into this flowing collage. There are a bunch of whole songs and some with transposed solos and sounds.

I read about this disk on Pat Metheny’s message board, the thread got long and heated with most people liking it and some thinking it was blasphemy. I think it is a wonderful take on some very familiar music, and with George Martin and his son at the controls.

There could easily be a “Love II” with there massive catalog.

I find it interesting and refreshing. And, I think those Beatles fans who absolutely hate it are the kinds of people who would hate anything that's not the "original/pure" version...

The whole "Beatle's songs as untouchable works of art" mentality just boggles my mind. Total crap. They could not even reproduce what they did on record so why should anyone else have to?

Disclaimer: I am not nor have I ever been a Beatles fan. That is not to say that I don't appreciate what they produced. I don't like asparagus, either. I yam what I yam.

Anyway, I have always felt that the best Beatles tunes were ones interpreted by other people: Wilson Pickett doing Hey Jude, Billy Preston doing Get Back, Jimi doing Sgt Pepper's, Faces and Rod doing Maybe I'm Amazed (OK not technically a Beatles tune but close enough). You get the picture. Take their sweet and charming melodies and funk or rock them out and then you have a great tune.

I got into a row with our keyboard player at our last practice on this very subject. The singer suggested Daytripper so I started just thrashing it to get the party started, find a good key for the singer, and generally move the process along. The keyboard player had a cow - 'We can't do it like that, we have to pay tribute to the song and do it justice and get as close to ther record as possible." When I asked him why he could not give me a good answer, he just had this vague blather about respect for the Beatles etc etc etc. (and speaking of respect, "Respect" was an Otis Redding song that Aretha took for her own - I don't think she ever stopped to think "maybe I should sing it just like him...")

Sorry to rant - but this whole Beatles thing has always bugged me...

OK - and what are Pat M fans doing talking about this subject anyway? Do they think that Pat M would copy a Beatles tune verbatim? Doesn't that kind of go against the whole jazz and improvisation thing anyway? Strange.
