I think maybe Anne's chiding me a little for emphasizing the fire. We all had smokey skies and some ash settling down for a couple of days, but no, it really didn't threaten surrounding towns. For those of you not familiar witht the area, in the mountains above Ojai, and running all the way over to the San Joaquin Valley (site of Daved's hometown, Bakersfield), the Los Padres National Forest and Sespe Wilderness form an amazing hundreds-of-square-miles area of truly "wild" land, some of which isn't very accessable to even the bears and bobcats, let alone humans. To borrow a thought from Edward Abbey (or maybe it was Wallace Stegner), even for people who wouldn't dream of trekking out in the woods, it can still be a real mental health boost just to know that such places still exist. For such a place to exist so near the greater Los Angeles megalopolis is even more significant. And one of the things that such true wild places are supposed to do is burn once in a while. To clean out the old, and spawn new growth. One wishes, however, that such cleansings were more often the result of things like lightning, and burned smaller areas, more often, and more selectively, rather than being due to some distracted slouch trying to burn some trash up near Frazier Park, but then ...
Anyway, Ojai really is beautiful. Right now. And if you stick around for Monday night the 16th, Julie Christensen, a friend of Anne's and another great singer, will be at SoHO in Santa Barbara. (Where the atmosphere will be just a tad mellower than Robben's appearances there -- and a ton mellower than the last time I was up there, which was, I think, to hear Los Straitjackets.) Oh yeah, and if you don't mind driving back and forth (it's about an hour and a half from Ojai each way), Cozy's in Van Nuys will be hosting Zac Harmon & The Mid South Blues Revue the night of the 13th, then seven (count 'em, seven) bands the night of the 14th for the Santa Clarita Blues Society's annual battle of the bands. Or you can just spend some romantic evenings at places like Azu or Movino Wine Bar in Ojai, or Wine Lovers or J's Tapas in Ventura.
OK. Mr. BlueRunner's One-Man Ventura County Tourist Board and Music Shill signing off. _________________ - BlueRunner
