And I always teach it as: ghoti (fish.) I think we borrowed that from George Bernard Shaw (one of my parents' faves...they named my sister for a character from Man and Superman.
Don't get me started on bizarre words. I love words that mean their antonyms as well, (sanction is the best one) and ohhhhhhh, those oxymorons! How I adore language(s)!
