|

Last night's concert at Humphrey's-by-the-Bay in San Diego was, as expected by me, a wonderful night of music by two of the great guitarists, Robben & Larry Carlton. The Dave Mason Band opend the show and got the crowd rockin'. Larry's band consisted of Greg Mathieson on keyboards, Travis Carlton on bass, Morris Lewis (?) on drums who played without ever having rehearsed with the band, and Robben, playing through a Dumble rig. Larry played his signature ES-335 all night and Robben used the LP Goldtop almost the entire evening. He did play his Telecaster on two songs. I didn't keep a list of every song they played...........I was there to just enjoy the night! However..........the show opened with Larry & Robben playing without the band..........just beautiful. Larry was very gracious regarding Robben and gave him a lot of room throughout the night. Robben played several of his own songs during the show........Indianola, Cannonball Shuffle, & a great version of Help The Poor. Larry mentioned that they recorded music from 4 of the shows from their recent Japanese tour and it will be released next summer. He wasn't specific as to it being a CD or a DVD. Larry also said they were planning on playing together again next year. Last night's show was the last on this year's schedule. I hadn't seen Robben play in person for about 7-8 years and, needless to say, this was a great treat for me. Now.....I'm looking forward to Saturday's clinic in Ojai! |

Adrian,
It's always great to see your posts. I can't believe it's been four months since the Villa Montalvo Carlton/Ford show and sounds like the Humphrey's gig was no less outstanding. In June Larry mentioned recording in Japan. It'd be great to see a release of that. I guess we'll keep our fingers crossed. Have a great time in Ojai!

Pato: Nice hearing from you, as well. Yes, the concert was just great.......Robben played his ass off! Ah.........those crystal chords! We arrived in Ojai earlier this afternoon, located the location of the guitar clinic, strolled downtown a bit, and are now heading out to dinner. I'll post a note after the clinic is over. |

I, too, wish you a great time, as I know you will. One of the things I enjoyed on my trip to Ojai was the coffee shops, and how friendly people were. Not like up here in "cold" New England...
I'm sure there'll be a great review. Most of all, just enjoy!
Also. take a walk downtown on Sunday morning, especially in the market area. You just might run into Robben... (hint) ... |

Johnny: That's what happens when I've had a couple of glasses of wine......hit the wrong button! If I see Robben on Sunday, I'll be sure to say hello for you. And, I'll post a review of the clinic sometime tomorrow evening. |
