I just wanted to take a minute and share how saddened and moved i am by the passing of James Brown. As a freshman at Temple University in the fall of 1971 I was freshly removed from a lilly white community in upstate NY with no African American residents that I can recall. About 3 weeks into the semester some black guys on my floor who befriended me suggested I go with them across the bridge to Trenton,NJ and see a James Brown show. This was an eyeopener to say the least. The energy, the funk, the ethnic mix of people having a blast was all new to me,and something i remember to this day. This experience led me into a lifelong search and love affair into the likes of Curtis Mayfield,George Clinton,Aretha Franklin,Prince, the electric funk eras of Herbie Hancock and Miles Davis ( On the Corner captures the mood and vibe of that night perfectly) and many others who are too numerous to mention.
That night took a kid who was listening to Bob Dylan, Jefferson Airplane and The Byrds and showed him a whole new take on things.Thank you and rest in peace James.

Thanks for the post. Sadly, I never had an opportunity to hear him live. But he was the soundtrack for my college years (1967-1972). When I head about his passing away I loaded every James Brown tune I had in my iTunes library into my iPod and kept the earphones in for hours, at work, at home, everywhere. Definitely an American original. _________________ - BlueRunner
