Lucky you, Strat Cat! The Basement nightclub is near the top of my list of places I want to visit someday. I have a great DVD of an Eric Bibb concert at The Basement and when I watch it, I feel like my living room is an extension of the nightclub. It seems like a wonderful, intimate place.

Yep - looks to be a good place - have never actually been there but I'll most likely make the trip up to Sydney for this one. They don't seem to be as active these days with filming the gigs there but I hope they'll do this one.

The Corner Hotel on the other hand is your typical Melbourne sticky carpet band room and is a big room. Should be packed to the rafters though and should be a fun night.

Cool

Chris

Got my tickets yesterday and I'm really looking forward to this one althought the Corner Hotel is not the venue I would have thought of as a first up choice but then again Robben played at the Gershwin Room at the Espy a few years ago so who's complaining. As usual with the East Coast Blues Festival at Easter there's a great selection of acts coming to town - Ben Harper, Bonnie Rait, Bo Diddely to name but a few.

Interesting venues.

I flew to Sydney when Robben played there a few years ago as I had always been overseas surfing when he had previously come to town. I walked past the venue during the day and the sound of him and the band rehearsing was fantastic. I was so excited I felt like a teeager again.

Unfortunately the gig was really disappointing,- maybe it is where I was sitting up the front at Robben's feet. Robben's playing, sound (man he was loud, bright and clean), and singing were awesome but you could not hear or when you could, you could not distinguish, the drums bass nor sax. Overall there was no groove. Perhaps they have tight sound restrictions in the home of the Chardonnay Swans. I had just seen Geoff Achison play with Rob Little and the We Will Rock You drummer, a rythm section that really goes off and wondered how good a concert with that rythm duo and Robben would sound

As we know - and I hope Robben and Larry know - the corner is a pretty dirty renovators delight type building BUT I have seen some great concerts there (including Alan Holdsworth in about 1986 and a Tommy & Phil Emmanuelle duet similar time) and the sound can be great, loud and balanced.

Please don't take my first post as a negative. I am a massive fan. I am suggesting this gig at the Corner could be fantastic, I have been thinking of flying OS for my 40th to see Larry and now he is playing 4 kms from home with Robben. WOW. Bring it on.

With a queue out the front to rival the Vatican at Christmas the atmosphere was great. By the time LC & Robben came on it was jamn packed with admirers and you could feel the expectation.

The show was fantastic. Beyong my expectations they seemed to be really going for it and much more playing outside than I expected. I guy next to me send "its like they set you up and then they play that one note and you go OHH THAT WAS A GOOD ONE.

My first position in the room in the back corner was all bass, some drums and a bit of guitar. It took five minutes of pushing to get to the other side of the room and the sound was great.

The encore Put it Where You Want was great. The crowd would not leave wanted more, unfortunately it was not to be.

I thought the best song overall was Burnable.

Thanks Larry & Robben for a great night, for taking the time to sign my CD and saying Gidday.

Can only agree with your comments on last nights show.
The Robben & Larry CD is good but the show at the Corner was something else.
It was a full house and they both went for it. As you said lots of outside playing but they were still true to the name, the Blues Project. Hard to pick a favourite from the night, it was just great from the first song to the encore.

Thanks for the reviews ! Sounds like it was a great concert. Funny you mention the Vatican... I found this cool pix of Three Wise Men (you'll need to cursor down the page a bit to see):

WOW!!

What can I say?!! I'm a relatively new Robben Ford fan (2-3 yrs) - thanks to my very cool guitarist friend Kirk Burgess.

But I just got to see Robben play with the Larry Carlton Blues Project up in Byron Bay for the East Coast Blues 'n' Roots Festival - and it was Amazing!!!
So worth it!

First time I've seen him play live and I was lucky enough to be right up the front. They looked like they were having so much fun - and what a great sound?
I had that distinct sense that I was in the presence of music greatness - what a privilege!

Getting to meet them at the end and having my CD signed was just a bonus!
Couldn't resist the urge to serenade Robben with a few lines of "Start It Up" - to which he seemed, at the very least, bemused.
But hey! A girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do! Hahaha!!
The perfect gentleman, ultimate professional - and what a great smile!!!
Just so good!

My mate Kirk said the midnight gig at the Basement was just as sensational!
