Question for the gear heads. I have a line on a used, very clean Sovtek 50 head. A friend who builds expensive and wonderful boo-teek amps took this in to tweak and ended up with it when the client did not show (or pay). New tubes caps, etc. He wants around 350 which seems reasonable. So, anyone with Sovtek experience out there with opinions?

those Sovtecs 50 heads sold new at about 280 Euros , here nobody pays more than 150 for a second hand.

Hi Ed:

This is consistent with what I have seen here. I am only considering this amp because of the work that has been done on it by the amp doctor. The extra work he has put into it will be worth the bucks. I was just curious if anyone had any comments on their tone ands reliability, etc. I am most definitely NOT a gear-head so a cheapo amp does not bother me. I went through my GAS phase years ago (when I had a lot more discretionary income, to be sure) until I realized that 1) you can only play one guitar and amp at a time, and 2) if I could not learn how to make any rig sound good what the hell was I trying to do as a guitarist? I have been much happier with this philosphy!

you are absolutely right. But one has certain sounds that one likes and I didn't like the 2 Sovtecs I have seen. I mostly use Music Man 112 RD 50s now in combination with a good OD pedal and that's it. They go for around 300-450,- Euros here and they sound good, no boutique sound but good sound every place you go. Although I have a lot of gear I am to lazy to carry all that stuff around. With my MM in one hand and my guitar in the other I walk just once from car to stage, increases quality of life.

You sound like my kind of player - one trip from the car to the stage with amp in one hand and the guitar in the other! Leaves more time for getting into the zone.

The 1-12 MMs are terrific. I have a friend who bought one when they first came out and it still sounds great and cuts almost everything else on stage. Even with the solid state preamp Leo designed one hell of an amp!

we shoudn't spread those secrets, these MM 112 RD 50s are still cheap, so I won't tell which speakers are best Cool

Chris Cain has been using a MM for years around here with an EV in it. Now you can't find one at any sort of reasonable price. I did play through a buddy's one night. I was surprised at how responsive the OD was. Chris doesn't channel switch. Just the neck volume knob and his fingers. And that little thing is loud!

I have a Music Man 210 65W. I bought it in Rome in 1986 and have been more than satisfied with it. Anyone know what they're going for these days? I'm curious.
