1970 silverface Super Reverb vs. Super reverb Reissue
whats the difference? will the silverface sound better? i haven't tried the Reissue and i really enjoyed playing the silverface today but he wasn't interested in the trade up to that point in time.I want to take into concidertaion as well that there will be warrenty with the SRRI.Even though up here in Canada it will be about 1600 bucks compaired to what he wants for the 70' super which is 900$.... which would be better? Opinions anyone?

Hi, Jack,
Sounds like an Allen Old Flame you are having built - check out Allenamps.com - I have one that I had David Allen build me 3 years ago - love it, but had trouble finding the right speaker for it... came with 2x10s, but finally wound up having him build me another baffle and putting a 12" Celestion Lead 80 into it - I use it more for archtop jazz, but with pedals, it sounds pretty good. I'm also having Stuart Hopkins build me a clone Deluxe with a few mods - I think he lives near you; Michigan, right? - "Stu-daddy" or "biasedmullard" on eBay. Sounds like something he would do!
Sorry we didn't get to meet in Seattle at Robben's clinic, maybe next time! |

Man, it's just amazing how much knowledge kicks around this board. You are absolutely correct!! Stu Hopkins is doing my 40 watt Deluxe Reverb. I'm hoping that it's ready in the next week or two. I'll let you know how it goes. |

| Another option would be to use the DRRI with 6L6s and a more efficient speaker. I did this with mine for 2-3 years and it worked great. Kind of like a Vibrolux with a 12" speaker. Tighter bass and much more punchy. Even that could be too loud at times. So I have swithched back to 6V6s since I mainly use the DRRI for my smaller low volume gigs. |

ahh thanks for all the replies everyone, im preatty sure i have decided on the super reverb and it beats the deluxe seven ways to sunday!!! still haven't played a twin.. is there anything im missing out on?
oh and davidS i was wondering out of curiousity what you use on the larger gigs?

| For the larger gigs I use a Fuchs ODS with an old Fender "Deluxe" 2X12 cab with Celestion G12-65s. |

The Twin is going to be much drier and stiffer, unless you are on a really big stage and can crank it. Not that much different than lugging the Super although it is heavier if you have to haul it a distance by the handle.
The Super should be able to handle anything. If it's too loud for the Super, it's likely to be too loud all around. The only issue is going to be getting a tone with it quiet.
FWIW, my Fuchs ODS100 with a single 12 Bogner cube is more than I need for most places. The only time I haul out the 2-12 cab for it anymore is open air festivals.

Ha! Jack, you must be in line ahead of me..... He built me a killer 18 watt Bluesbreaker, but I was killing small children with it - sounded great, but not my cup of tea. So, I'm waiting for the next one. Stu is very talented, but I've learned that you don't ask how things are going with the build process  Let me know how it sounds! |

phew.... just an update i picked up the super reverb and with my fulldrive im truly in love.. working on getting an OCD now and i've recently put a custom shop goldtop on layaway.. so i may have it by june lol.. thanks everyone again!

If Fender had made a 40-watt 1x12 reverb amp (on the Super/Por Reverb type chassis) in the blackface days, it would be the most sought-after vintage amp of all time.
I read that somewhere once. I believe it's true.

I agree! Which is why I had David Allen (allenamps.com) build me an "Old Flame" - his take on a Super chassis in a 2x10, 1X12 or 1X15 open back cab.... I converted mine from a 2X10 to a 1X12 and I really think it is a great amp - 40 watts ( 2 X 6L6) with tube rectifier, single channel, nice reverb with tone controls - with the right speaker, it is warm, but can scream with pedals. I use it for archtop jazz 75% of the time, but with my Marshall ShredMaster pedal and a slap delay, I can get a really nice RF tone.
I'm also waiting for an amp like Jack received, as mentioned above, from Stu Hopkins - a handbuilt Deluxe clone, with some mods and a 25/40 watt chassis. Takes a while, he's a busy guy, but he built me a beautiful 18 watt Bluesbreaker. Very talented, both of these builders, but no sound clips for either of them, that I know of. |
