Can anybody recommend a good book to get for my 10 year old son who just got his first guitar? _________________ "Somebody's got to make some music around here." - Robben Ford |

Actually, how about a dvd? Check out Tomo Fujita's "Accelerate Your Guitar Playing". Tomo teaches at the Berklee School of Music in Boston and the dvd will help your son master the fundamentals and head off bad habits. |

Thanks Ian. I actually have that DVD and you're right, it is great. But since he's just starting out, I want something that also teaches him the basics like time signatures, note values, and has a few simple songs to learn. I'll definitely share my Tomo DVD with him too. _________________ "Somebody's got to make some music around here." - Robben Ford |

J,
What a great opportunity you have, to start your boy on the guitar journey! Well, if I had a 10 yr old, I would teach him to play some simple songs by memory first, rather than getting into a book right off. I have been teaching for over 30 years, and have found that most kids will become bored and lose interest if locked into a method book. After he has a strong interest, you can bring on the books. It's just a bit overwhelming at first, to try mastering the physical aspects of playing AND learning how to read music at the same time. It would be even better if you make time to play along with him, share some quality time. Man, he'll grow up so quick, carpe diem, spend as much time as you can together!
