2006 for me:
Woke up … got out of bed…..dragged a comb across my head…

Best DVDs: Mike Stern, Dream Theater. CCEB even though it came out in 2005 this is a best of for two years so far.

CDs: Landau Live, Scott Kinsey, Oz Noy Live.

Shows: Robben Ford at the Coach House I also saw Buckethead there this year. I love this theater, very organized, fantastic sound, San Juan Capistrano is absolutely beautiful, thoroughly enjoyed visiting there.
Steely Dan/Michael McDonald, Michael Landau 3 shows, Jeff Beck, Zappa Plays Zappa, Pat Metheny, Vegoose festival. I will think of more later I’m sure.

Played lots of music, my band is going strong and we are playing better then ever, Friday night jam tonight I can’t wait. No new car for me I am still driving my 1997 mini van that I bought new and paid off in 1999, it fits my 2 X 12 cabinet perfectly, along with a PA and all the trimmings, great sound system too. No new animals just the same 2 dogs and one cat.

My favorite disk of the year is a recording I got from someone across the world from a show that was right next door. Robben Ford / Michael Landau / toss Panos / Jeff Babko and Travis Carlton on Bass at the Safari club in LA. They did a few shows there the playing is as free as it gets. RF and ML are major influences on my playing and listening, to hear them stretch out like this is the ultimate for me.

Later
Rob

Cool For a lot of reasons with which I won't bore this BBS, 2006 was not among the best of my 57 years, but having my younger brother take me to hear BB King for my birthday in May, and then taking my younger daughter to hear Robben with Michael Landau and crew two months later were defininitely high points. Here's to a '007 with more peace, more love, and more good blues.

2006 was a great year music-wise !

Seeing Robben play the Tampa Bay Blues Festival was the highlight. Bob Dylan at University of South Florida Sundome was also a great show for 2006.

I spent a lot of time listening to all kinds of music and a lot of time noodling around on my own guitar. One of the best things I did for myself in 2006 was to spend a weekend at Fur Peace Ranch, a guitar camp in Ohio. I took a beginner fingerstyle class that has really helped improve my playing.

Hi Warrior!
I had not heard of the Fur Peace Ranch, but just checked out their website. Man, what a lineup of instructors!! Sounds a bit like Robben's clinics. I really got excited when I saw David Bromberg as an instructor and performer with JormaK. Merci, would that be fun or what?

What did you think of your experience at the camp?

2006 was a good music year for me too. I played a handful of fun gigs and sat in with friends a few times too. I'm looking forward to more of the same in 2007. The shows I saw in 2006:

2/9/06 Ford Blues Band w/RF at Moe's Alley, Santa Cruz
5/23/06 John Hiatt w/North Mississippi AllStars at Mountain Winery
6/18/06 Larry Carlton & Robben Ford and Tommy Castro at Villa Montalvo
7/11/06 Lyle Lovett at Mountain Winery
7/30/06 Boz Scaggs & James Hunter at Mountain Winery
8/31/06 Willie Nelson at Mountain Winery
9/6/06 Heart at Mountain Winery
9/29/06 Sons Of Champlin at Little Fox Theater in Redwood City
11/2/06 Aerosmith & Motley Crue (ugh!) at Shoreline Amphitheater

Cheers!

For me the best moment of 2006, hands down, was spending the afternoon with Robben in his living room at the clinic in October. Very Happy

Nice avatar, jc!

Robben also signed the back of my ex-Baker's headstock, and before it was gone I took plenty of photos...

Thanks Johnny! That's my RF Sig guitar that I had Robben sign on my 30th b-day a few years ago.

I think they just added that weekend with David Bromberg. It wasn't on the schedule a few weeks ago. Tommy Emmanuel has taught workshops there in the past as well. I'll be going back in May for a songwriting workshop.

I haven't been to one of Robben's clinics (yet), but I'm hoping there'll be a new instructional DVD with some of the material he presents at his clinics.

I went to Fur Peace Ranch last March for a 4-day camp (about 12 hours of actual instruction by Jorma Kaukonen -- two workshops both Friday and Saturday, three workshops Sunday and one on Monday.) There were 12 students in my Beginner (level 2) Fingerstyle Class. Some of the students had 20-30 years guitar playing experience, but had never learned fingerstyle technique. I've been playing for about 5 years and I was one of the least experienced players in the group. The pace was fast and challenging. I think everyone was a little nervous at first about playing in front of Jorma -- we all had to play something to demonstrate our level before the class got underway. I chose an easy 12-bar Blues in E with an alternating bassline and a few pinches and plucks for melodic intention. A few brave players attempted one of Jorma's songs.

During the workshops, Jorma taught 7 fingerstyle arrangements of popular Blues songs (Keep on Truckin, Another Man Done Gone, Come Back Baby, Freight Train, Know You Rider, S.F. Blues and Nine Pound Hammer) based on his playing techniques. All the songs we covered in class were recorded to CD and transcribed for us by Jorma's teaching assistant. We were also allowed to make our own recordings of the workshops.

Saturday night, there was a private concert for the students, featuring Jorma, Jack Casady, and Happy Traum (Happy and Jack were also teaching classes that weekend). And, there was a student performance on Sunday, which I volunteered for. I totally messed up the song I tried and left the stage feeling dumb, but at least I gave it a shot.

Aside from the stage fright, the camp was a wonderful experience.

Wow for some reason I did not know this thread took off. I think this might be the year for me to do one of Robbens workshops but I don’t think it will be at his house again.

Thanks for all the info and response, now on to 2007.

Rob

PS one more great DVD for me was "The Derek Trucks band", good stuff!
