This is the last sentence in the write-up:

This concert is part of their PBS series called "Sierra Center Stage" which is showing nationally. The plan is to release the concert on DVD sometime in 2005.

Huh???

I know, I read that too. Very confusing. I think they cut and pasted the text as background info.

Huh???

Cool! We looked at some of your pictures so we can spot you at Moe's. I have shoulder length brown hair with blonde highlights and my hubby has brown hair. Hope we get good seats.

We recognized the fountain at PPP and Mowry in your picture. We don't live far from there.

See you soon!

We're getting sooooo excited!

Soooooooooooo, how was the show? I had read on another Forum (from sombody that attended the show at Moe's) that Robben used a mid 60's LP with P-90s through a Blackface Super Reverb with a Zendrive pedal. NO DUMBLE! Is that true? I have tickets for next weekends show at Jazzbones in Tacoma and I was hoping to see/hear the vaunted RF Dumble tone. I'm sure the show will be killer but it looks like he doesn't have the "Dumble(s)" with him on this tour.

Thanks

50's Goldtop with p-90s into a super with a Zen. Best tone I've heard from him ever. Simplicity itself...he even turned down the amps reverb after a couple songs. Good show..short at just over an hour. Volker was amazing, but had a much thinner sound and the soundman was ditching him a bit. Very cool version of yet another interpretation of Help the Poor.

Was the show recorded? Will it be available for purchase for us deprived souls in the Southeast?

If the show was recorded (which they can do at Moe's, they have the technology) it was on the QT and only band guys took home CD's.

I went to the second show, sorry I missed some of the other Bay Area board members. My wife had an early engagement so we had to switch to 10:30.

Still a good crowd. Not as packed as the last time the brothers did a whole night show, or as packed as when Robben brought his band in for a two show night. So you could stand on the dance floor and enjoy the show without feeling like you were on the morning train in Tokyo.

Band was Robben, Pat (no Mark) Tony Lufrano on keys, Myron Dove on bass and Volker Strifler. Robben and Volker traded off leading songs. Besides being a great guitarist, Volker is a phenomonal blues singer. You really feel it. He played a Nash Tele though a Two Rock and the sound man could have given him a bit more in the solos, but he played better than I've ever heard him. He was comfortable with the band and just smoked. Maybe standing next to Myron and all that groove just opened the doors for him. They were having a great time. Also Volker supported Robben really well, turning way down and placing comps in tasty spots. Robben also really stayed out of Volker's way, either turning down his guitar or laying out completely while Volker was soloing. Tony Lufrano is on all those Blue Rockit records supplying the tasty organ parts and Saturday was no exception. Very tasty and musical. Made great use of the solos he took too. Myron Dove is a force of nature on the bass. He was playing a basic 4 string Fender Jazz instead of some modern thing like the 6 string F-Bass he used on the Tiger Walk tour. Big old AccuGroove cabinet that he helped develop together with a 2500W Stewart amp, and he's going to hold down the bottom and keep it pinned in the basement. Pat played great. With Myron standing next to you putting it down, there's no place else to go. It was great to see Pat smiling and just having a grand old time back there. His son Gabriel came up for a couple of numbers including one he wrote that Robben said he will be releasing. Gabe really laid into the drums on that tune, which had a kind of slow funk feel to it, he and Myron really locked up and drove it deep.

Robben came out the first song and looked a bit uneasy, then excused himself to run back stage and retune his guitar. They have such a loose family feel. That classic sheepish Robben grin and "Hey Volker, you take it, I forgot to tune up". Then when he comes back out, he waves off taking a solo and lets Volker have the tune. Then they launch into Indianola and Robben is on. He's using a '54 LP with single stop bar and P90s. I couldn't tell if it was the same one he used on all those recordings. Maybe Daved can say if he has two of them. Plugged into a Zendrive and BF Super Reverb. Again, the origins of the SR I don't know. I know that Robben has one at home, and I know that Pat has several and that typically he brings one and Robben just flys in with his guitar. Whatever it was, Robben was getting the most amazing thick lead tone with the Zen and bridge pickup. Think the best of the 1st BlueLine album and then thicken it a bit more. He was also getting some great just slighty broken up tones without the Zen turned on. By the end of the set he was really getting into it. He did a version of Got A Mind To Give Up Living where he took the only solo. But it was pure Robben blues bliss. You couldn't hear the first lines of the next verse for all the applause of the appreciative audience. Who also stood in rapt attention while Robben and the band broke the song down to a whisper, and Robben milked these beautiful plaintive licks out of that 52 year old guitar. Man, was that ever inspiring.

Thanks for the great review Aeolian ! Very Happy

I absolutely love Volker Strifler's new CD and I hope he has plans to tour in support of it. Great songwriting & great music !!! "The Dance Goes On" is a beautiful album.

I believe that was Robben's own Super that he was using, Steve. We had a case built for it last year when he was out with Larry C so he could transport and use it regularly. He has really kind of swung over to preferring SRs over Twins whenever possible if he doesn't have a Dumble available.

I noticed it out in the loading dock at Lon Cohen's in North Hollywood (where we store his gear) when I was over there last week. Lon told me Robben had asked to have it carted for him, so I assume it is the amp he is using with his brothers at the moment. I know he prefers Fenders over the hi-powered Dumbles for the Ford gigs.
