Robben's penultimate gig in the UK more than lived up to expectations. This time I took my good lady wife with me and she thought it was fantastic - I really wasn't sure how she'd react but she absolutely loved the show. She even said she preferred the Baker to the Telecaster.
The set list was pretty much the same as in other shows, judging by the posts here. During the opener, Chevrolet, Robben looked just a tad unsure of the audience - not much eye contact with the audience while singing - but when the floodgates opened in a deluge of applause after that first number, he realised he was definitely among friends. Then he was positively beaming, thoroughly enjoying every minute of it. He was constantly looking at the other band members to establish eye contact - just that Dewayne Pate and Toss Panos didn't latch on too much. Still, it didn't detract from the music at all. They did a fantastic version of "The Way That You Treated Me (You're Gonna Be Sorry)". Sheer genius ... and that is not an exaggeration. It is so good when you go to see an artist you really admire and then when you get there he blows you away even more ....
The Baker sound a little hard-edged at times, but when he stomped on the Fireball, the sound just took off and we were treated to some of the best playing I have ever heard from Robben. It was truly amazing. I honestly do not know how he does it - and I've been playing since 1962. What an absolute treat it was! Oh, and the Telecaster sounded so good. Why doesn't mine sound like that?
However, as good as Toss Panos and Dewayne Pate were, and they WERE good, I have to say that my alltime favourite RF band would be Tom Brechtlein, Rosco Beck, Neil Larson and Bob Malach - that man played his heart out last night. He was a joy to listen to.

Dave,
Did Robben used his Fireball during the gig? I cannot remember he used it in Holland. Didn't he play the Dumble then?? |

Hi Lefty,
Yes Robben used the Dumble and the Dumbleator. We also noticed Robben signaling one of the crew over at one point and telling him something. This took about 10 seconds - and all the time he was still playing the most amazing licks. There should be a law against someone doing those sort of things!!! _________________ "Creativeness often consists of merely turning up what is already there.
