I'm going to be in London for three weeks for business in April. Can anyone recommend some good places to get my blues and beer fix while I'm there?

Hello Johnny,
Nice to hear from you.
Guitar is Gibson L6S, scalloped fingerboard and with Kent Armstrong's motherbuker pickups, goes from Tele, Strat and much heavyer then any humbacker.
But for fun check this out

Man, you sound really good. What's your amp? Strings and string gauge? Have you got those pickups wired full humbucking or in series or split coil? They sound really good. You are getting great tone. Do you have the Motherbucker Cool pickup in the front, or are they both the same? |

Hello Red Suede,
Thanks for the nice comment ma man .
You will laugh now!
Amp is cheap transistor Crate GFX 212 on clean channel, drive is from DIGITAL Korg AX1500G. In small pubs I’m using this setup instead of my valve amps.
Strings are Rotosound 10s. Neck pickup is MBUK 2 (19k cool) and bridge is MBUK 1 (27k hot). Here is a link to pickups info.

You sound just wonderful, man. You should record some stuff if you haven't already. Really good feel for the idiom. |

Hi Doc,
Really, really nice playing! It makes me want to drive the 70 miles to hear your band.
This is my firs time to the UK, but another guy who's coming with me is from London and knows the area well. I check with him to see how feasible it would be to get transporation to Northampton. If it turns out I can make it, I'll let you know.
Thanks,

Jim, don't know his proximity to where you're staying in London, but you may want to check out Ron Sayer... |

Hey Johnny,
Another excellent suggestion! I'd forgotten about Ron but as soon as you said his name, it reminded of that version of Lovin' Cup that Ron posted here awhile ago. It was fantastic.
I'll see if he's playing anywhere while I'm there and check him out if possible.
Thanks,

Check out:
http://www.bluesinlondon.com
It's got a comeprehensive gig listing as well as reviews and interviews with London based and international players + links to resources so you can check out who's who's
April sees the Spitz Festival of Blues throughout the month. My pick would be:
Wilko Johnson Sat 7th
British R&B punk legend, founder member of Dr. Feelgood
Seasin Steve Sat 20th
Amazing hobo bluesman
Robert Belfour + Duke Garwood Fri 27th
Fat Possum recording artist Belfour with is Hill country blues and south londoner Garwood with his wierdly complelling deconstructions of the blues
T Model Ford - Sat 28th
Another Fat Possum artist
Thursday 12th at the legendary 100 Club sees the very highly regarded UK blues guy Ian Seigal
Aint Nothing But The Blues... bar offers an 'authentic' chicago style atmosphere and some of the best bands around. Again, my pick would be:
West Weston's Bluesonics, Fri 6th/Sat 21st
Top harp man in town.
Big joe Louis & His Blueskings - Fri 20th
If you're a player then there's also a comrehensive list of the many jam nights where you can have a go yourself... |
