Robben Ford Discussion

Hi, I'm David Million, UK guitar player who recently stumbled across Mr Ford - dunno how I managed to be ignorant for so long, the man is a genius.

Robben's is pretty much the sound and technique I have always 'heard' in my head, growing up and playing my own wooden version of the blues. I am now studying the jazz aspects intently and thinking about how I can adapt (steal) his tricks in my own playing.

Meanwhile, I need to do some visiting around here and meet a few people - particularly interested in talking about how to get Robben's tone without a Dumble!

Hi David, welcome to the forum! You'll find a lot of posts here about Robben's tone, and his technique. There a lot of discussion as well about his gear. Come on in and have fun.

Welcome aboard. Great to have another musician from the UK check in. After listening to the samples on your site, I'm curious: Are there any particular vocalists who have grabbed you? Strange as it may sound, even though your range is a bit higher and the timbre a bit different, there are some elements of the great Johnny Hartman. (With a little Mose Allison thrown into the mix.)

Yes that Zen Drive is something to check out even if Robben doen't play it .
I tried it with a 1971 modded Fender Vibrolux. Actually i play it over an Hiwatt 50 with a 4X12. Very good . It maintains the clarity of notes and boost the amp in a nice way. helping it to show the guts Neutral

Many thanks for the nice, welcoming comments. I am desperate to get that lovely, biting blues lead sound that Robben uses - it's got a sort of 'honk' to it, as if he somehow managed to stick his signal up a duck's backside and get a signal out the other end. As for his technique, that's quite another matter, but rather than BE Robben, I intend to pick up some of his style and nuances in how I play.

Regards the question about my vocal 'style' - I don't have one - I just try and hit roughly the right notes! Oddly enough, in my current work with an Eagles hobby band, I am managing to do some quite scary harmonies - amazing what you can do with some jump leads connected to your balls........

Hello David,

I checked out your site and the tunes sound great. Wanderlust is especially nice.

The recordings are nice and clean and the guitar sounds are nice. You have some cool chops too!

I first heard Robben Ford in the early 90's and have been listening off and on. I recently got back into his music and I think I finally get it. The guy is a genius

It's great fun to listen to your recordings, you are such excellent players. On my website www.soultingo.at if you go on mp3s you can download some live recordings, much Zendrive to be heard. Being as talented as a singer as the both of you, Mr. Bill Morgan's mocking made me invite some singers to that concert.. the result is.. hmmm... let me know

Guys - I kind of fell off the map for a while back there - mucho apologies and many thanks indeed for some kind but undeserved praise. I have some checking out of tunes to do in return and will come back soon with comments!

Wow! Been checking you out fella and boy, can you play guitar! I loved 'Need your love so Bad' - one of my favorites, and 'Seed' is divine. I wish I could play so fluently - must do some more practising........

I don't know what prompted your earlier modesty, but having listened to your excellent tunes and great voice, I seem to have picked up quite some 'competition' from you and Ed. This is a good thing - I needed a boot up my ass to raise my game and play better!

Fine guitar playing, feller, and we must remain in contact.
